 Renewable Energy Today: China to Provide Financial Backing for Renewable Energy
Kyodo recently reported that the Japanese business daily Nihon Keizai Shimbun has revealed that the Chinese government plans to spend 140 billion yuan (about $17 billion) by 2020 to build renewable energy facilities throughout the country.
According to Nihon Keizai Shimbun, the initial 140 billion yuan is part of a total 500 billion yuan (about $40 billion) that the government plans to invest in the development of wind, solar and alternative energy plants, including 360 billion yuan (about $43.5 billion) earmarked for nuclear power plants.
Nihon Keizai Shimbun said the new government initiatives were prompted by fear of possible energy shortages.

The big four -- Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group, Mizuho Holdings, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp and UFJ Holdings -- are expected to cut annual rates to 0.01 percent or less, from the current 0.02 percent, the newspaper said, quoting financial sources.
The rate cuts would be the first since March 2001, as well as the first that does not accompany a shift in the Bank of Japan's monetary policy, the Nihon Keizai said.
