Every year, as the drop in temperature paints the prefecture with the vibrant colours of autumn, the city of Nihonmatsu, located between Fukushima and Koriyama in Nakadori, is buzzing with tourists.
A chrysanthemum doll "kabuki" performance telling the story of the Nihonmatsu Boys Corps was also shown several times daily.
The amount of time and energy put into preparing the Nihonmatsu show every year is reflected in its reputation as Japan's definitive chrysanthemum doll exhibition, with tour groups and television crews coming from all over the country to admire the beautiful scenes.

This was the first day of a weekend trip sponsored by the city of Nihonmatsu, a rural locale tied to Dartmouth by the fact that a native son, famous historian and pacifist Kan'ichi Asakawa (1873-1948), had been the first Japanese to graduate from Dartmouth.

The people of Nihonmatsu sent their town board and a reporter to the reception.
Before we got to Nasu View we stopped at a famous fortress where the young boys of Nihonmatsu courageously defended their town during the Meiji Restoration because all of the grown men of the city had been killed.
Nasu View hotel was on the side of a mountain and overlooked a scenic, although foggy/smoggy, view of Nihonmatsu.

Hundreds of paper lanterns are paraded through the streets during Nihonmatsu Chouchin Matsuri
October 4th – Nihonmatsu Chouchin Matsuri (the lantern festival of Nihonmatsu) is held in the city of Nihonmatsu, Fukushima Prefecture, for three days starting October 4th.
Hundreds of lanterns are tied to 7 tall lattice structures which are paraded through the streets on giant drum carts as traditional Gion music (music of ancient Kyoto) is played.

Clothing chests flourished and we often identify them by the locality in which they were made: Sendai, Yonezawa, Nihonmatsu, Tsuruoka...these are a few town names synonymous with specific tansu styles.

All of sudden in the summer of 1999, I wanted to visit the town of Nihonmatsu in Japan for the first time in 50 years.
I have never been to the town since I left in my twenties.
When I stayed at her house in the late 1940s, there were not many houses surrounding her house.
