On July 15, 2000, Niijima was hit by an earthquake of a magnitude of 6.3.
All of the 413 residents of Wakago (the northern district of Niijima) were forced to evacuate the area and take refugee in Honson (the southern district where the Niijima Glass Art Center is) or in Tokyo for a month, until August 20.
While paying close attention to its future activities, we are going to hold the annual Niijima International Glass Art Festival as scheduled, from November 11 to 23.

A lot of the Niijima crowd had left Japan at this stage unfortunately and amongst those that were left Steve Mc and Ollie both decided to be gay so we needed new personnel.
It was much bigger than the Niijima Event and looked a lot more organised with carparks, and cable cars going up to the 'solarium' and God know what else but we weren't complaining.
The field the rave was in is actually a ski resort in the winter, and the slope itself was reserved for camping - it made a cool view in the darkness - all the lights from thousands of tents all the way up the mountain.

Niijima - a small Island maybe 200 miles from Tokyo was the location for a big Trance/Ambient party organised by the collective known as Anoyo.
Everyone was trollied and in a party mood apart from Anna who decided to save herself for the next day so she took a sleeping tablet and slept through people falling over her, pouring beer on her and God knows what else.
The sunrise rave - which could so easily have been screwed by the weather - was perfect, and those people who were supposed to come with us but dropped out regretted it when the heard all about it.

WELL we were warned it was the rainy season over here in Japan, and it basically hasn’t stopped either drizzling or pelting since we arrived, but the swell gave us an unexpected surprise today on the first day of the waiting period for the Niijima Quiksilver Pro.
It was all but flat at about 830am when the crew reported to Habushiura Beach for the event’s official opening ceremony, but spirits were bolstered by a stirring exhibition from traditional local drummers who dead-set went off.
The boys simply threw their boards in the boot and ran back to the Grand Hotel, content in the knowledge that Japan is basically theft free.

 Museum of Glass
Created between the years of 1992 and 1996, the nine glass spheres comprising the installation evoke the cultural and historical authenticity of traditional Japanese glass floats, while the large scale and colorful individuality of each piece are hallmarks of internationally renowned artist, Dale Chihuly.
The idea for the series was born on the small, rocky island of Niijima, ten hours by ferry out of Tokyo Bay in Japan where Chihuly visited Osamu and Yumiko Noda, former students at Pilchuck, who had started a glass school perched on a cliff looking out to sea.
The Museum of Glass is a fine arts museum dedicated to the presentation of the medium of glass within the context of contemporary art in all media.
