Greek Mythology: NICAEA / NIKAIA Naiad Nymph of Nicaea in Bithynia
NIKAIA was the NAIAS NYMPHE of the springs or fountain of the Greek colony of Nikaia in Bithynia, Anatolia.
She was a devotee of the goddess Artemis, who was seduced by Dionysos with the help of the god of sleep, Hypnos.
A summary of the story from "Women of Classical Mythology" tells us: Nikaia was loved by the shepherd Hymnos, but a follower of Artemis she was distressed by his persistance and shot him through the heart with an arrow.

PERCHED on the edge of the city and rising from the bowels of a disused quarry, the Olympic weightlifting centre is an impressive sight - a gleaming facility amid the rundown ruins at the edge of Nikaia, a southern Attica neighbourhood.
The first of Athens' newly-minted Olympic stadiums to be completed, Nikaia got its test run on December 9-10 with an International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) grand prix that both impressed and exasperated visitors.
Access to Nikaia proper may also be problematic, if a new road linking to Petrou Ralli Ave is not finished in June as scheduled.

Nice originally had the Greek name Nikaia Polis, or the town of victory (from Nike, victory, and Polis for city).
In 154 BC Romans helped Massiliotes defend both Nikaia and Antipolis (Antibes) from Ligurian attacks, after which Cemenelum became a Roman settlement along the Via Julia, a major Roman road.
