Nikita, rehabilitated by an espionage-training program after shooting a cop in cold blood, is unleashed on the world with the understanding that she will occasionally carry out government-ordered assassinations.
As part of Nikita's training, she is subjected to a life-or-death test in which the only means of escape, a tiny window, has been sealed off by bricks, and, in executing Nikita, it's as if Besson encountered a similar dilemma.
Neither Nikita nor Zoe is lacking in imagination, per se: the common flaw between them is that they meet a cul-de-sac at the halfway point, and, after much scrambling, only recover from this in their epilogues.

Nikita was written and filmed by Luc Besson, a French cine-brat whose movies (The Big Blue, Le Dernier Combat) are triumphs of gorgeous, nihilistic imagery.
Nikita's Anne Parillaud played the title character as a feral animal only barely tamed into a methodical killer -- she gave the role the needed comic-book pizzazz.
Fonda, by contrast, is intriguingly self-contained, but her tautness makes you realize what an empty cipher the character was in the first place.

Season one of La Femme Nikita ended on a cliffhanger of sorts, as heroine Nikita (Peta Wilson), who has been forced on threat of death to join the covert anti-terrorist organization Section One, was given the opportunity to escape her penury by her fellow agent, and lover, Michael Samuelle (Roy Dupuis).
Captured by the sinister "Freedom League," Nikita is used as bait to draw Michael into a trap...and without giving anything else away, it can be noted that they both manage to wriggle out of this predicament and survive for the balance of the season.
Somehow, Nikita survives attacks from both within and without Section One, and is promoted to team leader, an honor which understandably doesn't impress her too much since she is now an even bigger target for extermination than before.
