Nikitin, a former navy captain, spoke with reporters (Tuesday) one day before a judge is due to consider an appeal by Russia's prosecutor general to re-examine the case.
Nikitin say the reason given for the appeal was the prosecutor general's demand that there was an "obvious need" for additional investigation into what were described as "shortcomings, flaws and violations" of Mr.
Nikitin said he believed the prosecutor's action was timed for maximum political effect, because the appeal meant he had to cut short his speaking tour in the West.

 IVAN NIKITYCH NIKITIN
Nikitin was born about 1699; he began his career as a singer in the court choir, and received some training in art from Gottfried Dannhauer.
In 1732, the brothers Nikitin were involved in the "Rodyshevskii affair." They were arrested for possessing "a notebook containing a lampoon on Feofan Prokpovich, Archbishop of Novgorod." After five years in the Peter and Paul Fortress, the brothers were whipped with a knout and exiled to Tobolsk in Siberia.
It is a pity that Nikitin's biography is not very well documented; this leads to questions about many aspects of his life, which include the exact dates of his birth and death (some scholars believe that he was born around 1699 and died around 1754).

Although Nikitin's acquittal was astounding news, it remains to be seen whether the verdict signified a great step forward for civil rights and the rule of law in Russia.
