  Fir - MSN Encarta
The Nikko fir from Japan, which is a much smaller tree, reaching a height of about 25 m (82 ft), is pollution-resistant and is often planted in towns and cities.
True firs are distinguished from similar and related trees by the circular leaf bases which leave a flat scar when the needle falls.
The common silver fir of Europe is classified as Abies alba; the Spanish fir as Abies pinsapo; the Grecian fir as Abies cephalonica; the Caucasian fir as Abies nordmanniana; the Nikko fir as Abies homolepis; the noble fir as Abies procera; the grand fir as Abies grandis; and the balsam fir as Abies balsamea.

 Fir Information
Firs (Abies) are a genus of between 45-55 species of evergreen conifers in the family Pinaceae.
Firs can be distinguished from other members of the pine family by the fact that their needle-like leaves are attached to the twig by a base that resembles a small suction cup, and by erect, cylindrical cones 5-25 cm long that disintegrate at maturity to release the winged seeds.
Nordmann Fir, Noble Fir, Fraser Fir and Balsam Fir are very popular Christmas trees, generally considered to be the best trees for this purpose, with their aromatic foliage that does not shed many needles on drying out.

Fir cones are some of the most attractive of all the conifers.
While all wild species of firs are tall trees reaching 50 to 200 feet at maturity, many dwarf forms are available, allowing the homeowner to choose plants that will remain as small trees or even shrubs that stay under 2 feet.
Firs flourish in well-drained, acid soils in cool, moist climates and as such, can be challenged when planted in the Midwest.
