Nikolai Alekseevich Nekrasov - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nikolai Alekseevich Nekrasov (November 28, 1821 – January 8, 1878 {O.S. December 28, 1877}) was a Russian poet, best remembered as the long-standing publisher of Современник (The Contemporary) (from 1846 until July 1866, when the journal was shut down by the government in connection with the arrest of its radical editor, N.G. Chernyshevsky).
Nekrasov was born the son of a petty Russian officer and a Polish gentrywoman.
Nekrasov was attacked by his old friends for allowing his journal to become the vehicle for Chernyshevsky's sloppy and often poorly written broadside attacks on polite Russian society.

 Literary Encyclopedia: Nekrasov, N. A.
Nikolai Alekseevich Nekrasov made a contribution to nineteenth-century Russian literature that was uniquely varied, becoming both one of the leading publishers of his day and one of the foremost writers.
Nekrasov was born on December 10 1821 into a minor noble family in the small town of Nemirov in Podol’skii province, where his father Aleksei Sergeevich was serving in the army.
Nekrasov was becoming the poet of the faceless masses and the simple peasant in particular, developing acceptable literary use of the people’s vocabulary to present their concerns and experiences to a reading public who had to get used to hearing their voice for the first time.

 Nikolai Alekseevich Nekrasov
Nikolai Alekseevich Nekrasov (November 28, 1821 - January 8, 1878 {O.S: December 28,1877}) is a largely-forgotten Russian poet, best remembered as the long standing publisher of Современник (The Contemporary) (from 1846 until July 1866, when the journal was shut down by the government in connection with the arrest of its radical editor, N.G. Chernyshevsky).
Dostoevsky gave the keynote eulogy, saying that though Nekrasov was the greatest Russian poet since Pushkin, he was not greater than him nor Lermontov.
The poem preserves the speech and idiom of the peasants around Nekrasov's home on the Volga, which, for the folklorist, makes it one of the prime works of 19th century Russian literature.

 Literary Encyclopedia: Korobeiniki [The Pedlars]
It was also a watershed in the development towards his mature poetic best of Nikolai Alekseevich Nekrasov, with the creation of The Pedlars (Korobeiniki), the first of the three great narrative poems on the theme of the Russian peasantry that stand pre-eminent in his oeuvre.
This can be taken as the logic of the way in which Nekrasov chooses to present the collective tragedy of the peasantry in the section recounting the story of the weaver Titushka and his memorable “Song of the beggarly wanderer” (Pesnia ubogogo strannika), as well as his heroes’ individual tragedies overall.
Nekrasov’s depiction of the individual fates of his heroes adds to this pessimism, for it suggests a dependence of human fortune on the timeless force of Chance.
