Nikolai Kapustin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nikolai Kapustin [Капустин] (born 1937 in Gorlovka, Ukraine) is a Russian composer and pianist.
Kapustin studied piano with Avrelian Rubakh (pupil of Felix Blumenfeld who also taught Simon Barere and Vladimir Horowitz) and, later, Alexander Goldenweiser at the Moscow Conservatoire.
Kapustin views himself as a composer rather than a jazz musician.

The music of Nikolai Kapustin has made a minor flurry in the classical music world in recent years, largely through the Hyperion CD (CDA67159) of his piano music by Steven Osborne issued in 2000, and through the championing of his music by pianists Marc-André Hamelin and Nikolai Petrov.
Kapustin’s piano music is technically formidable, and as a pianist he possesses a technique to match.
Kapustin’s compositional output is quite substantial, and exceeds 100 opuses.

Kapustin carefully thinks out every single detail, no matter how small, of his music and notates it as such, giving the listener the impression that the pianist is improvising when in reality he is playing the music as written.
True, Russian composer Nikolai Kapustin is not a household name, but with CDs like this, hopefully his time will come (and soon).
Kapustin is often labeled as a 'jazz-' or a 'crossover-' composer.

The Variations is a mini-catalog of all of Kapustin's styles, from the romantic to boogie-woogie to Errol Garner-style jazz.
After Kapustin's ode to Strawinsky in the opening theme and variations things are really starting to heat up in the Eight Concert Etudes, which blow away anything Gershwin ever wrote.
Kapustin's little Sonatina is a comic gem and in this beautifully light and humorous interpretation not only shows you Kapustin's expertise in blending jazz and classical, but also indicates the links between Haydn's compository approaches and 20th century jazz practices.

classical music - andante - 'the finest living composer you've never heard of' - nikolai kapustin
Kapustin began playing jazz piano as a teen in the early 1950s and toured as a pianist with Russian big bands in the 1960s and 1970s, at the same time quietly composing concert music that was in the classical tradition but was totally imbued with the sound and aura of jazz.
Kapustin's music reflects a gigantic soul, with an extraordinary optimism and love of life.
As Hamelin says, Kapustin's music is generally extremely difficult, but because of the remarkably skillful way it falls in the hands, it's not as hard as it sounds.

 Kapustin: Piano Music
Nikolai Kapustin is a Russian composer who writes jazz piano music teeming with energetic spontaneity and bristling with the kind of creative immediacy one associates with improvisation (although the music is fully and meticulously written out).
Kapustin is already known to the Hyperion catalogue through Steven Osborne’s trail-blazing recording of the first two Piano Sonatas and the Preludes in Jazz Style, and Marc-André Hamelin is another pianist who has for years played his music in concert.
'Hamelin is one if Kapustin's strongest advocates and proves his perfect interpreter: super cool, he sounds utterly laid-back even in the most fearsome rhythmic traps; his phrasing is exquisitely turned and 'finished'; and his affection for the music shines out in every note.

 Anderson meets Kapustin
Kapustin, a dapper, silver-haired, well-trimmed chap of moderate height, with elegant moustache, shaded glasses, and a cigarette never far from his mouth - you can almost imagine him taking a role in a Hollywood cops-and-robbers special - is plainly unused to interviews; the answers came hesitantly, and sometimes with telegraphic brevity.
Kapustin spots a link here: "Horowitz was very interested in Tsfasman, who was the first jazz-piano-player in the Soviet Union, in the 1940s." The career of Aleksandr Naumovich Tsfasman, in fact, shows striking parallels with Kapustin's own.
Kapustin formed a quintet while he was still a student, and appeared both with that formation and with Yuri Saulsky's Central Artists' Club Big Band.

Yet Kapustin (born 1937) is Ukrainian and is a jazz pianist, one who was moonlighting as such when studying piano with Alexander Goldenweiser at the Moscow Conservatoire.
Whatever, Kapustin's had a thriving career as a jazz pianist and this, as Steven Osborne writes in the booklet notes, has had a significant effect on his own music - and Kapustin's a prolific composer, one classically trained.

There is no question that Kapustin, who studied with one of the best classical piano teachers in Russia, Aleksandr Goldenweiser, and who has made his living off and on as a touring jazz pianist, has the technique to play (and write) spectacular solo jazz pieces.
Born in 1937, Kapustin is very much alive, a wonderfully prolific and active composer, and a virtuoso pianist of the highest caliber.
There are very few pianists performing Kapustin's piano music in the world today, mostly because of extremely hard to find scores, and thus a general ignorance of his existence.

Apart from the extreme virtuosity and jazz-influenced syncopations that are hallmarks of Kapustin's style, it is also worth noting that the development of the fourth movement begins with a walking bass line, briefly transforming the piano into a one-man jazz combo.
The daring of such a compositional gambit is indicative, I think, of the self-confidence that seems to pervade the whole sonata, and in rising to the challenge with apparent ease he rounds off one of his most impressive works.

Kapustin has released CDs too (Olympia label and other labels like Bohemia, etc.), but I have nt listened to the composer's performances yet.
Kapustin's piano music is not really jazz nor does it inhabit the serious classical genre, yet he taps a vein that easily utilizes in a very profound way both those worlds.
