Nikolai Kondratiev - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nikolai Dmitriyevich Kondratiev, Russian: Николай Дмитриевич Кондратьев (1892-1938) was a Soviet economist.
Kondratiev’s influence on economic policy lasted until 1925, declined in 1926 and ended by 1927.
Kondratiev was 46 at the time of his murder and was only rehabilitated almost fifty years later, on 16 July 1987.

Safe Haven | The Kondratiev Cycle in Prices
Nikolai Kondratiev, a Russian economist, performed the first detailed investigation of these patterns in a series of articles in the 1920's.
Kondratiev presented a variety of analyses, the most convincing of which were price charts like this one which clearly showed fifty year oscillations over the late 18th through early 20th century.
Some longwave researchers, including Kondratiev himself, have hypothesized that the long wave is an emergent property of the postindustrial economy and, as such, is not visible before the industrial revolution in the late 18th century.

Marxism and the theory of 'Long waves'
Kondratiev based his whole theory on a parallel with Marx's analysis of the trade cycle - the normal cycle of booms and slumps which is a fundamental feature of capitalism.
Analysing the periods 1790-1844 (Kondratiev's first cycle) and 1844-51 to 1890-96 (the second cycle), and using data mainly drawn from the USA and Britain, he shows the following: that the period 1815-40, which Kondratiev depicts as a period of descent, was in fact a period of unprecedented economic development.
Kondratiev argued that the application of new inventions was dependent on a previous process of accumulation of an investment fund.

Kondratiev also deviated by supporting the Socialist Revolutionary Party's populist agrarian position that expropriated land be redistributed to the peasants who cultivated it.He was removed as director of the Conjuncture Institute in 1928 and the institute was dissolved.
Kondratiev was one of a number of academic economists who were arrested during the purges of the early 1930s because of their opposition to the economic policies of Josef Stalin.
Kondratiev believed that "the material basis of the long cycles is the wear and tear, the replacement and increase of the fund of basic capital goods, the production of which requires tremendous investment and its long process." He echoed a number of earlier economists.

Nikolai Dmitrievich Kondratiev (1892-1938) ranks as one of the greatest Russian economists of all time.
Kondratiev is famous for conducting the first systematic econometric investigation into the idea of long cycles in the world economy, and for the creation of a centre for the study of business cycles, the Conjuncture Institute, in Moscow in 1920.
‘The publication of four volumes of Kondratiev’s texts, which were mostly inaccessible until now, is a major event for academia and for all those interested in the twentieth-century history of Russia and the USSR, of planning, alternative economic polices, the development of statistics and its application to social sciences, and agricultural economics.

"Nikolai Kondratiev (1892-1938) was one if not the most influential of the talented young Russian economists working in the first third of the century, and certainly the best known internationally at that time.
His decisive contribution was the presentation of the hypothesis of the Long Waves in capitalist development – named by Schumpeter and known thereafter as ‘Kondratiev waves’ – that for some time represented an important topic in the research agenda of economics.
The second section mentions the predecessors, the key features of Kondratiev’s analysis and the elements of the consensus and dissension it generated among contemporary authors.

Kondratiev was an official in the Soviet finance ministry under Stalin and had politically incorrect economic views.
Kondratiev’s long waves — 25 to 30 year upswings followed by downswings — offered a pretty good explanation of the depression of the inter-war years and, while he was not around to see it, the global economy’s “golden age” from the 1950 to 1973.
Reading, without being a paid-up member of the Kondratiev club, which he thinks is largely a technological phenomenon, argues that there are reasons to expect the two motors of the global economy — America and Asia — to have a prolonged correction.

The most well-known of these efforts is the Kondratiev cycles (K-cycles) theory, developed in the 1920s by Russian researcher Nikolai Kondratiev.
That seems to be the case in some literature, but Kondratiev was Russian, and particularly interested in WW I, which was an East European war.
This is graphed as a simple sine wave with period 50 years, and an amplitude of 10 units, which corresponds to the Kondratiev cycle.

Kondratiev waves, also called grand supercycles or surges or long waves, occasionally also referred to as the K-waves, are the term for a regular S-shaped cycle in the modern (Capitalist) world economy.
Some economists divide the Kondratiev wave into two ’seasons’; the Kondratiev Fall and the later part, the Kondratiev Winter.
The Russian economist Nikolai Kondratiev (1892-1938) was among the first to bring forward these observations in the 1920s.

Two Dutchmen, J. van Gelderen (1891-1940) and Samuel de Wolff, had previously argued for the existence of 50- to 60-year cycles in 1913, but it was only recently that their work was translated from Dutch and reached a wider audience.
The theory hypothesized the existence of very long-run macroeconomic and price cycles, originally estimated to last 50-54 years.

Probably thousands of researchers have attempted to repair the Kondratiev cycles theory since then but as far as I can tell, no one has identified the obvious explanation: Generational cycles are COMPLETELY INDEPENDENT of technology cycles.

Research this by separating stock market data into two separate series, one for the Kondratiev curve and one for the generational crises we've identified, and verify that this solves the problem that these hundreds of researchers have been working on all these years.
