In 1798 the Grand Duke was appointed Inspector-General of the Cavalry.
A versatile personality, the grand duke had a good command of European languages, he liked to read, had an interest in the achievements of science, the theatre, literature and music; he played various instruments and was known as a clever, well educated and extremely energetic man with his own opinion.
After the revolution of 1917 the grand duke was arrested and shot in the Peter and Paul Fortress in 1919.

Soviet Russia was renamed the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
In 1998 Vladimir Brovkin published "Russia After Lenin." After the death of Lenin, Bukharin became a full member of the Politburo and opposed the policy of initiating rapid industrialization and collectivization in agriculture-a position shared by Stalin at the time.
