Nikolay Ivanovich Merkushkin was born on February 5, 1951 in the village of Novye Verkhissy of the Insarsky Region of the Mordovian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in a having many children peasants’ family.
From 1992 to 1994 worked as the Head of the Republic Property Fund.In January 1995 N.I. Merkushkin was elected the Head of the State Assembly of the Republic of Mordovia and on September 22, the same year at the Constitutional Assembly – the Head of the Republic of Mordovia.
In 1998-2003 N.I. Merkushkin was the President of the Association of the Povolzhje Constituent Entities Economic Interaction “Greater Volga”.

Russia: In gubernatorial elections in Magadan oblast, Nikolay Karpenko comes first with 37.6% of the vote, ahead of Acting Governor Nikolay Dudov with 26% and Andrey Zinchenko with about 10%.
In the second round on February 16 Dudov wins 50.4% against 42.4% for Karpenko, 6.2% voting against all.
