Nikolay Mikhailovich Shvernik (Никола́й Миха́йлович Шве́рник) (1888-1970) was the Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR (or President of the USSR) from March 19, 1946 until March 15, 1953.
Following the death of Stalin, Shvernik was removed as titular president of the USSR and replaced by Kliment Voroshilov on March 15, 1953.
In 1957, Shvernik again became a full member of the Presidium and remained on the body until he retired in 1966.

In 1924 Shvernik was appointed people's commissar for the workers' and peasants' inspection of the Russian SFSR and member of the Presidium of the party Central Control Commission.
On March 19, 1946, Shvernik replaced Mikhail Kalinin as chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR (March 19, 1946 - March 15, 1953).

Nikolay Shvernik joined the Russian Social Democratic Workers' Party in 1905 and was an activist of revolutionary movement in Samara.
Elected at parliamentary elections a member of the Supreme Soviet, Shvernik was involved in creation of the new Soviet parliament.
As a result of reformation of Politburo in October 1952, Shvernik was promoted to full membership (Oct. 16, 1952 - March 5, 1953) in the party Presidium, but Stalin's death interrupted Shvernik accession to party top leadership.

The 1974-built, 7,400-dwt, 6,876-grt general cargo vessel Nikolay Shvernik is seen in this photograph while she was underway in Holland during June of 1990.
She was built in Poland at the Szczecinska Shipyard and sailed as Nikolay Shvernik until 1991 when she was sold and renamed Sompa by the Estonian Shipping Company Ltd. In May of 1999 she was sold for scrapping in India for $490,000 (US).
