Nikon D70 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Both the Nikon D70 and Canon EOS 300D/Digital Rebel are ground breaking with respect to their price/performance ratio.
Feelings often run high between advocates of the D70 and those of the 300D; advocates of the 300D point to a lower price point, and supposedly better sensor technology yielding less noisy images, while advocates of the D70 point to greater control over the operation of the camera, and defend the quality of the sensor.
The Nikon D70s is essentially an update of the D70, adding a larger LCD (2" instead of 1.8", though still having 130,000 pixels).

Nikon D70 Review by Thom Hogan
Nikon's response was to turn their ship broadside and fire a full salvo from every gun onboard: the D70 tries to be a better camera than the Digital Rebel in almost every way while almost meeting it in price.
When you mount a lens on the D70, the effective focal length is increased by about 1.5x (e.g., a 20mm lens shows roughly the same angle of view as a 30mm lens would on a 35mm body; note that the 1.5x is a rounded figure, the actual increase is slightly more).
Nikon's manual warns against using anything except a manual blower (the turkey baster type, with the rubber bulb): "under no circumstances should you touch or wipe the filter." Curiously, Nikon's authorized repair centers use pretty much the same cleaning methods I do, which require you to touch the CCD.

 Nikon D70 review
History has shown that Nikon is not usually the first to break open the market with innovative camera design but when they then release a new model, they frequently go one better than the competition by offering a better set of specifications.
The Nikon D70 is supplied with a comfortable, wide neck strap that "shouts" Nikon in bright yellow, body and lens caps, eyepiece cap and monitor cover for protection of the LCD screen.
Colours on the Nikon D70 are neutral rather than saturated as is sometimes the case on other consumer models, but should you prefer a bit more punch this can be set in the relevant menu section by changing image parameters to vivid colour.

The D70 incorporates a next-generation 6.1-effective megapixel DX Format CCD image sensor that produces 3,008 x 2,000-pixel images, and is optimized to deliver a wide dynamic range and superbly sharp details.
Nikon programmed the D70's advanced system LSI processor for improved performance to produce vivid colors and clarity, optimized auto white balance, auto tone and color control, and to run real-time processes that diminish digital noise in long exposure shots for cleaner overall results.

The Nikon D70 is aimed squarely at the "prosumer" digital SLR market, or in other words the same individuals that the F70 and F90 were aimed at with film cameras.
However it is widely rumored that the D70 sensor is the same as the D100 sensor and that it is manufactured for Nikon by Sony.
Nikon tech support worked hard with me to resolve the issue but alas, they said the camera was a clunker.

Nikon D70 Review: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review
The D70, announced on 28th January 2004 is Nikon's answer to the new sub-$1,000 digital SLR market, its clear competition being the Canon EOS 300D (Digital Rebel) announced last August.
The D70 is revealed by Nikon exactly two years since the D100, the D70 appears to share quite a lot with its sibling including a six megapixel CCD sensor and Multi-CAM900 auto focus system.
The D70 also appears to have quite a bit going for it which are the primary complaints for EOS 300D owners, flash exposure compensation being one of them.

The initial expectation was that Nikon would be introducing an entry-level digital SLR competitor aimed at the Canon Digital Rebel, however, based on features and performance, the Nikon D70 seems destined to be a strong competitor even when compared to the higher end Nikon D100 and Canon EOS 10D.
Designed for a broad range of customers, from novices to serious and experienced photo enthusiasts, the Nikon D70 digital SLR will allow photographers to easily adopt digital technology into their existing Nikon camera system, or to begin building a system that will bring ongoing enjoyment in the future.
Auto ISO on the D70 functions even when using the built-in Speedlight, or the SB-800 or SB-600, to automatically control the sensitivity to match the amount of light from the flash.

Nikon's press release claims that the Dynamic Buffer allows shooting up to 144 frames at 3 fps, but this requires you to set the camera to JPEG NORMAL and use a card that can keep up (specified in the press release as a SanDisk 256MB Ultra II).
In general, I've never liked Nikon's implementations of these modes, as they never quite are as extreme as they need to be and they limit the user's options.
While several Nikon subsidiaries list "USB 2.0" in their spec sheets, it appears that Nikon is taking advantage of a USB consortium convention that says that digital cameras that only support the FULL speed (12mbps) transfer rate can label themselves as USB 2.0, even though they don't support the HIGH speed (450mbps) transfer.

The Nikon D70's method of buffering photos before writing them to the CompactFlash card means that the card's write speed directly impacts the number of frames that can be recorded in an extended sequence.
