Nikon F - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nikon lenses are usually known as Nikkor lenses, except for the "Series E" lenses of the early 1980's.
One possible disadvantage the Nikon F had compared to other professional cameras was the fact the entire bottom and rear plate was made in one piece, and had to be removed to reload the camera.
The Nikon F was succeeded in 1972 by the Nikon F2 series.

 Nikon F / F2
Nikon F: The Nikon F was developed in parallel with the Nikon SP/S3 and the two units share the same external body design and a number of parts (40% by one count).
Nikon F2: The F2 was designed to fix some of the ergonomic and mechanical flaws of the F. The finder doesn't vignette with long lenses, the prism finders now lock on, the wind lever is more comfortable, the shutter speed was increased to 1/2000 sec, and so on and so forth.
The F was acclaimed as an extremely rugged camera and for four decades through its various iterations (F, F2, F3, F4, F5), ruled supreme as the photojournalist's camera of choice for photography in harsh conditions - from the Antartic to the Sahara.

 Nikon Digital SLR System
Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR DX, $800, this kind of super wide range zoom is typically not very good, but Nikon lards on the dollars and the weight (more than one pound) and the results are acceptable; the vibration reduction compensates to some extent for the slow maximum aperture of f/5.6.
Nikon 16mm f/2.8D AF Fisheye, $760, full-frame fisheye
Nikon does not make any telephoto lenses specifically for their small-sensor digital cameras, which is a shame because it would be possible to cut the cost and weight dramatically without the requirement of casting a 24x36mm image for an old film camera.

Nikon F, Milestone in SLR Camera History
Nikon Engineers once showed their talent in managing the developing of their important rangefinder SP/S3 (continuation of the RF series - S1, S2) and the new Nikon F in parallel.
Professionals were sure that their investment on Nikon F system was extendible, as they could equip it with the correct accessory later to finish other kind of job requirement they had not thought of.
At the end, Nikon F obtained worldwide acceptance in 35mm professional photography, and it was the first time a Japanese brand to dominate in photography market, as in the past they were all Germany brands' territory.

The series evolved gradually, with the original Nikon F being followed by the F2 (1971), F3 (1980), F4 (1988) and the critically acclaimed F5 in 1996.
A great number of Nikon F series cameras and Nikkor lenses are being put to the test day after day in various locations around the world - years, even decades, after their initial launch.

 Nikon F - Background & History
Although the concept of the eye-level SLR predates the 1959 Nikon F by at least eleven years, with the 1948 Contax S taking those honors, SLRs were not given great acceptance by professionals because of extra weight, reliability problems, and dim viewfinders, compared with the standard of the day, the Leica M3.
Yes, the Nikon F was expensive in its day, comparable to the price of an F5 today, but those who had them swore by them.
With the ascendancy of the Nikon F as the king of photojournalism throughout the 60's (and the F2 through the 70's), 35mm film soon became the format for choice; the plusses of portability and convenience were not lost on amateur camera owners, and before long, 35mm cameras came to dominate the landscape.

The F was introduced with the 21/4, 28/3.5, 35/2.8, 50/2, 105/2.5 and 135/3.5.
The F was the first to offer this feature, and very few professional cameras have chosen to equal it due to the extra precision and cost involved in manufacture.

The F was introduced in 1959 with a full range of quality glass (not quite up to Leica standards but then who is?), motor wind and interchangeable viewfinders.

The F does not allow the usual process of framing the scene through the viewfinder, locking up the mirror, releasing the shutter, then proceeding to frame the next shot, because the F's mirror cannot be locked up before the exposure.
Some Nikon F bodies were factory fitted with a motor drive, the F-36, and the required motor drive plate.

All of Nikon’s DX Nikkor lenses are optimized for the DX format sensors found in all Nikon digital SLR cameras, making the lens smaller, lighter and with exceptional center-to-edge-to-corner image quality and performance.
When used with a Nikon digital SLR camera and NikonCapture software, images shot with the AF DX Fisheye-Nikkor 10.5mm lens can be transformed into ultra-wide angle rectilinear images with a choice of 100° and 130° horizontal angles of view.
Nikon's i-TTL technology improves the accuracy of fill-flash exposure and white balance in a picture, by seamlessly integrating color information from the speedlight's monitor pre-flash with information from the 420-pixel RGB sensor.

This is a great lens, though not necessarily the sharpest of the 20mm's Nikon has made (Galen swore by the 20mm f/4, and I've known other photographers who love the 20mm f/3.5).

Nikon F-mount - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The F-mount was first introduced on the Nikon F camera in 1959, and features a three lug bayonet mount with a 44mm throat and a flange to focal plane distance of 46.5mm.
The Nikon F-mount is one of only two photographic lens mounts (the other being the Pentax K mount) that were not abandoned by their associated manufacturer upon the introduction of autofocus, but rather extended to meet new requirements.
Many current autofocus F-mount lenses can be used on the Nikon F, and the earliest manual-focus F-mount lenses of the 1960s and early 1970s can, with some modification, still be used to their fullest on all professional-class Nikon cameras.

Nikon 300mm f/4 Nikkor Review by Thom Hogan
Since it's introduction in 1988, the 300mm f/4 has been the low-cost alternative for a high-quality telephoto lens in Nikon's lineup.
The 300mm f/4 produces far better images at 300mm, but that's a lot of weight to be carrying around, so consider the application you'll use it for.
For a short time in the early 1990's it appeared that Nikon was going to standardize on 39mm drop-ins for their telephoto lineup.
