  Nikon FM3A - Camerapedia.org
Though solidly in the Nikon FM tradition of fully manual compact SLRs, the FM3a was also intended to fulfill demand for a much-requested replacement for the famous FE2, discontinued in 1989.
In manual mode the FM3a is ready to measure the flash in TTL mode, but it also continues to meter normally, allowing the photographer to select any speed from 1 second to the top flash-sync speed of 1/250 second.
Nikon was rumored to be considering a digital successor to this "modern classic", though this has not yet happened.

 Nikon FM3A - - PopPhotoMarch 2002
Few would have expected, when the original Nikon FM first appeared way back in 1977, that 25 years later we would be testing what is, in effect, its great-grandson, the FM3A.
The most obvious and operationally significant change: The FM3A is the first of the FM series to incorporate an aperture-priority autoexposure mode, settable by turning the shutter dial to the locked "A" setting.
The FM3A is also the first of the FM series with TTL flash capability, achieved by means of an SPD cell located in the base of the body, and via a four-contact hot-shoe.

Nikon FM3A - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The FM3A was the successor to the renowned Nikon FM2N camera of 1984 and was the last member of the successful, semi-professional line of Nikon compact 35 mm SLRs.
Nikon owners began to demand a durable, precision-made camera with the AE electronic features and prized construction of the discontinued Nikon FE-2, which had begun to skyrocket in value on the secondhand market.
Nikon believed that serious film photographers were not interested in every possible automated bell and whistle, but rather the highest possible quality and precision of control, and a service life estimated not in years, but decades.

BetterPhoto Photography Reviews: FM3A SLR Camera
Nikon's FM3A, is a manual-focus, 35mm SLR camera featuring a special hybrid shutter control system enabling full mechanical exposure control range plus electronic shutter speed control.
This Nikon series began with the classic Nikon FM2, which nearly two decades ago, was the first model to incorporate the then world's fastest shutter speed at 1/4000 second.
I bought the Nikon FM3A, after my second hand Nikon FE died a final death and I was in the middle of a classical portraiture session at a local university.

The Nikon FM3A can function perfectly without batteries, mechanically timing shutter speeds right out to its maximum of 1/4000th of a second, and its all-metal body is engineered to last a lifetime.
The Nikon FM3A is a great camera that you could use very happily for the rest of your life and then hand down to your children.
The FM3A is not able to do so due to the fact that it has only Aperture Priority but also other modern Designs such as the Nikon F100 or Minolta Dynax 7/9 and so on will just tell you that it is impossible to shoot with the chosen Exposure time.

Even though Nikon deliberately cripples newer AF cameras from making full use of older MF lenses, they are decent enough to continue putting the mechanical lugs on the newest lenses to ensure that they work perfectly with older cameras.

APOGEE PHOTO MAGAZINE: Nikon FM3a Camera Review
Nikon is one of the few manufacturers that has stuck with manual focus, not only in the production of a handful of cameras (the FM2, FM10, FE10 and F3) but also in the support of older manual focus lenses on currently available cameras--something that can't be said for Canon.
Nikon's all-metal design is a refreshing change from recent moves toward plastic components, which don't survive contact with hard objects as well as solid metal.
Those familiar with Nikon cameras know, of course, that nothing happens until the lever is slightly out from the body—a characteristic I should have mentioned to a friend who borrowed my FE2 many years ago and brought it back three days later unable to get it working.

 Discussions @ Nikonians - FM2n + FM3a and D2X or + simply F6?
Albeit Nikon has already thought of this, and I am sure the F6 is made with the most superior quality standards.
F series Nikons are still selling today, and film is proving itself to be a great medium to work with despite the advances in digital imaging.
For the same reason, Nikon F6 is going to be sought after as the ultimate automatic tool for the art of 35 mm film photography as long as this art is alive — and no more advanced film camera is produced.

Actually, the FM3a is a completely new body casting and mechanism, with hereditary but also completely new engineering of mechanical and electronic components.
Also the collectibility of FM3a being the last MF camera produced by Nikon is higher value than the FE.
Most important the earliest FM3a is only 5 years old so buying a used gives you more security in terms of defects and abuse of use.

Nikon FE2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The FE2 is a member of the classic Nikon compact F-series 35mm SLRs and was built upon a compact but rugged copper aluminum alloy chassis similar (but not identical) to the ones used by the earlier Nikon FM (introduced in 1977), FE (1978), and FM2 (1982) cameras.
The Nikon FA of 1983 also used this basic body design and the limited production Nikon FM3A of 2001 continued to use it until 2006.
Nikon believed that advanced amateur photographers were not interested in every possible automated bell and whistle, but rather the highest possible quality and precision.

 Camera Review
I have to laugh at the bogus reports of Nikon MF cameras failing - there's always one or two on all these sites, but I've never met anyone with such rare bad luck in real life, given that everyone else I know has never taken their manual Nikon in for anything more than a cleaning.
Fm3a is designed to suit for the needs of purists, economical in every way, and perhaps, simple and just the right amount of automation to get the full out of what's called photography.
Price-wise, the FM3A is rather steep though, considering that the only added features, vis a vis the FM2n, are the AE, exposure compensation, match-needle, DX coding, TTL flash capability and the film window at the back.
