Nile perch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Nile perch (Lates niloticus) is a species of freshwater fish in family Centropomidae of order Perciformes.
Adult Nile perch occupy all habitats of a lake with sufficient oxygen concentrations, while juveniles are restricted to shallow or nearshore environments.
The Nile perch was introduced to Lake Victoria, in East Africa, in the 1950s, where it is fished commercially and has had a catastrophic effect on local fishes, causing the extinction of several hundred native species.

 Nile Perch, Trade and Environment
In the 1950s, a proposal to increase fish catches in the lake by introducing the Nile perch was adamantly opposed by scientists who feared that the lack of a natural predator for the fish would result in the imminent destruction of the lake's bountiful ecosystem.
By 1964 the Nile perch was recorded in Tanzania, by 1970 it was well established in Kenya, and by the early 1980s it was abundant throughout Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya, the three countries surrounding Lake Victoria.
Extensive fish kills, Nile perch, loss of habitat, and overfishing have caused many fisheries to collapse and many protein sources to be unavailable at the market for local consumption.

Socio-economic effects of the evolution of Nile perch fisheries in Lake Victoria: a review
The development of the Nile perch fishery of Lake Victoria occurred in this context, characterised by an increase in the availability of gear after 1983 and by the excess demand situation resulting from the sharp decrease of the catch of Nile perch on Lake Kyoga.
All the canoes used in the Nile perch fishery, are planked canoes, mostly of the “Sesse” type.
Actually the fact that the growth of the Nile perch fishery of Lake Kyoga had apparently not been limited by a lack of demand in the 1960s is another indication of the adaptability of people's taste to new but otherwise quite palatable fish species.

issg Database: Ecology of Lates niloticus
Nile perch took decades to become evident in Lake Victoria and then burst into the huge biomass of the late 1980s and 1990s and the subsequent harvest for export.
In recent years the Nile perch population has begun to stabilise and the availability of large fish has declined as has the catch which is now way below the capacity of the factories which process and export the fish to USA, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
The view of the three riparian governments is that Nile perch is an essential export earner and they have attempted to brand it as "organic", as it is wild and without artificial additives etc.(although cage rearing has begun).

Competition for Nile Perch Frames and the Effect on Food Security In the earlier years of Nile perch processing, the remains of Nile perch after removing fillet, commonly known as frame (or Mgongo Wazi), was considered a waste, and factories incurred expenses to dispose of it.

Frozen Nile perch fillets exports, on the contrary, are about stable, and much lower than before the ban, at 9 000 tonnes.
