In 1921 in New York City, Niles became master of ceremonies at the Silver Slipper nightclub before teaming up with Marion Kerby, with whom he toured widely in the United States and Europe as a folksinger.
Niles was Encouraged by celebrated journalist and music critic "Marse Henry" Watterson to continue singing folk songs: "The time is coming when Barbary Ellen and songs like that will be bound up in great leather volumes and set on library shelves."
Each of Niles' main entries includes a general introduction to the scholarly background and presumed history of the ballad in English, and each variant includes tales of his adventures among his colorful informants.
