Nillumbik council has invited a land owner to subdivide an environmentally sensitive property in a challenge to the State Government's "green wedge" policy.
Nillumbik overturned council laws that had restricted residential development on a 15-hectare green area at Wattle Glen, a hamlet between Diamond Creek and Hurstbridge, in August.
Nillumbik's group manager of environment and community services, Bill Forrest, said the council would consider asking the government to extend the urban growth boundary so the land could be developed.

Nillumbik Shire Council has management plans, as well as flora and fauna records, for many of its environmentally significant Reserves, and intends to have management plans in place for all, in the near future.
Nillumbik Shire Council obtained funding to undertake riparian revegetation along sections of the Yarra River, at Griffiths Park, Eltham, and the Plenty River, Greensborough.
Nillumbik Shire Council is currently undertaking two revegetation projects funded by the State Government, under their Crown Land Improvement Program.

Nillumbik Shire Council has urged Planning Minister Mary Delahunty to stop two supermarket developments it says would turn the rural atmosphere of the Plenty Valley into a Chadstone or Northland.
Nillumbik Council has written to Ms Delahunty saying the supermarket developments are contrary to the government's Melbourne 2030 strategy and local planning policy.
A Nillumbik Council spokesman denied malfeasance but confirmed a mistake was made in the zoning of the site when the council produced its latest planning scheme.

The Nillumbik Reconciliation Group grew out of a 1997 decision by Nillumbik Shire Council to appoint an Advisory Committee to arrange an appropriate ceremony and venue with relevant Wurundjeri elders for the Shire to make a formal acknowledgment, apology and commitment on behalf of its citizens to the region's traditional owners.
Nillumbik Shire Council provides support through its Cultural Development Grants, consults the Group on a range of matters involving Indigenous history, and partners NRG in a number of events and activities.
Flag raisings, where the Aboriginal flag is raised alongside the Australian flag, are held at the Nillumbik Shire Offices, in parks and at local schools.
