Newly remastered and reissued, Nilsson Schmilsson is one of those albums.
The icing on the cake for longtime fans of the album would have been to include some of the material from the quad mix (all of the songs are noticeably different).
All said, Nilsson Schmilsson remains one of the greatest pop albums ever recorded--with or without the bonus tracks.

 Harry Nilsson
Singer/songwriter Harry Nilsson was born Harry Edward Nilsson III in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1941.
The irony was that, although Nilsson was primarily identified as a singer/songwriter, the song was actually written by folk-rocker, Fred Neil.
Much of Nilsson's notoriety came from a period in the mid-1970s when he was a drinking buddy of John Lennon in Los Angeles (where Lennon was living during a separation from Yoko Ono).

Harry Nilsson : Nilsson Schmilsson - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
Nilsson had a hit, a Grammy, and critical success, yet he still didn't have a genuine blockbuster to his name when it came time to finally deliver a full-fledged follow-up to Nilsson Sings Newman, so he decided it was time to make that unabashed, mainstream pop/rock album.
There are certainly hints of the Nilsson of old, particularly in his fondness for Tin Pan Alley and McCartney melodicism -- as well as his impish wit -- yet he hadn't made a record as cohesive as this since his first time out, nor had he ever made something as shiny and appealing as this.
In short, it's a near-perfect summary of everything Nilsson could do; he could be craftier and stranger, but never did he achieve the perfect balance as he did here.

 Nilsson - Nilsson Schmilsson
Nilsson's most successful album was a bouncy Richard Perry production, whose catchy songs were deepened by the singer's puckish humor.
The hit single was Nilsson's powerful cover of "Without You," a previously overlooked cut written and first recorded by Badfinger.
On the albums that followed, Nilsson ventured into standards and ragged rock, but he would never again be this consistent or popular.

Nilsson Schmilsson: Who is Harry Nilsson and Why Haven’t You Seen this Film?
For the uninitiated among you, Harry Nilsson was one of the most acclaimed American singer-songwriters of the late ’60s/early ’70s, one whom Lennon himself proclaimed the Beatles’ “favorite group” in 1968, winning two best vocal Grammies shortly thereafter.
Yet Nilsson’s artistic and behavioral rebellion (not to mention the fact that he could be a rip-roaring drunk) would lead to pariah status.
With the help of Nilsson’s family, associates and occasional victims, Scheinfeld and Leaf produced more than a loving musical tribute: They unraveled an enigma whose genius was haunted by personal demons rooted in an impoverished childhood.

Nilsson's decision to combine his quirky, tongue-in-cheek Tin Pan Alley aesthetic with rock arrangements proved to be a successful one, and contributions from a stellar cast of British and American studio regulars didn't hurt either.
The album yielded a number of hits: "Coconut" (as in "put the lime in the coconut") and "Jump Into the Fire" were two, but his highest chart placement came with a song he didn't write, "Without You," a song penned by the English band Badfinger.

The musicians on "Nilsson Schmilsson" are first rate with artists such as Jim Gordon (drummer for Derek & The Dominos), Klaus Voorman (played bass guitar on John Lennon's "Imagine" album), Chris Spedding (an accomplished guitarist) and Gary Wright (keyboardist for Spooky Tooth) all adding their two bits on this excellent album.
Ranked in the Top 100 albums of all time, "Nilsson Schmilsson" certainly has earned it's rightful place and is an album all lovers of seventies music should have in their collection.

 Harry Nilsson
Anyone who's listened to Nilsson knows that it's nearly impossible to resist his charms as a singer.
It was a bold move, as it marked the first time a rock singer had crossed the generation gap to record a whole album of standards.
Inspired by Jenkins' suite Manhattan Tower (a favorite of Nilsson's when he was a kid), A LittleTouch traces the arc of a relationship--from the wide-eyed courtship of "Lazy Moon" to the philosophical "As Time Goes By"--with songs segueing into each other via orchestral passages that hint at what's to come.

As the clime of pop hardened into rock, and groups like The Beatles dissolved, Nilsson teamed up with producer Richard Perry to bolster both of their careers.
Its sweetest line is about "a fence with bits of crap along its bottom, blown by a windbeam," and as Herbie Flowers' bass slides between the luminescent clouds of mellotron, Harry catches all of the Beach Boys in his Brandy Alexander'd croon.
Closer "I'll Never Leave" is sumptuous and bittersweet: a farewell to Harry Nilsson's baroque pop past with producer George Tipton.

Rolling Stone : Nilsson Schmilsson : Review
As a singer, Nilsson got lucky when his wistful rendition of Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talkin' " became the theme for Midnight Cowboy.
Blessed with a tenor that could make angels weep and the smarts to know how to use it, Nilsson nevertheless failed to ignite the album charts until 1971's Nilsson Schmilsson.
The rest of the album established Nilsson as a talent of unusual depth and scope: Years before public escapades with future drinking buddy Lennon confirmed Nilsson's personal excesses, Schmilsson plays like a study in bipolar disorder.

There's the Spanish version of "Without You," plus two songs not on the album: "How Can I Be Sure of You" and "Lamaze." None of these are essential (though "Lamaze" is pretty funny), but they're all nice to hear.

You may have heard a song by Harry Nilsson and not even know it.
The pedal steel torch song "Joy," the giddy swoop of "You're Breakin' My Heart" ("you're tearin' it apart, so fuck you"), and the accordion bounce of "I'd Rather Be Dead" all surround the crystalline "Remember (Christmas)," where Nilsson's voice reaches angelic heights as he stretches the word "dream" into five heavenly syllables.
An album of standards led by composer and Sinatra pal Gordon Jenkins, it could have been disastrous in lesser hands, but "It Had to Be You" and bonus track "Over the Rainbow" truly harness Nilsson's vocal range.
