Randy Newman   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Randy Newman (born November 28, 1943, in Los Angeles, California) is a United States songwriter, arranger, singer and pianist who is notable for his mordant, immaculately written pop songs and for his many film scores.
At the same time, Newman's drawl is reminiscent of that of blues artists like Sonny Boy Williamson and of New Orleans rock-and-roll singers like Chris Kenner (he lived in New Orleans as a child and spent summers there until he was eleven years old).
Newman had become a professional songwriter by the time he was seventeen, and landed a contract as a singer with Reprise Records.

Going back to yesterday, both musically and lyrically, is how Newman made his name, is how he pays for the Lexus he sings about, or the fancy schools where he sends his kids.
Randy Newman, the bastard child of George Gershwin and Albert Brooks, has blessed us with a dozen new songs, all loosely about Bad Love.
Newman's songs have layers of double meanings, intricacies and complexities that modern goofballs like Beck (who Newman admires) can only dream of.

Named Stereo Review's album of the year (and, really, can you ask for a better endorsement than that?) upon its release and generally regarded as the album that introduced Randy Newman the songwriter to a wide audience, Nilsson Sings Newman has gained a reputation of being an minor masterwork.
As such, the preponderance of quiet piano-and-voice tracks (featuring Newman himself on piano, Nilsson on vocals) means the record can slip away upon the first few listens, especially for anyone expecting an undeniable masterpiece.
