Nim - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nim is usually played as a misère game, in which the player to take the last object loses.
Normal play Nim (or more precisely the system of nimbers) is fundamental to the Sprague-Grundy theorem, which essentially says that in normal play every impartial game is equivalent to a Nim heap that yields the same outcome when played in parallel with other normal play impartial games.
Nim has been mathematically solved for any number of initial heaps and objects; that is, there is an easily-calculated way to determine which player will win and what winning moves are open to that player.

Math in the Movies -- Nim
Nim is a game that has been played, in various forms, on at least four continents for at least four centuries.
Nim is often called "The Marianbad Game" because it was played, in its most familiar version and the one given here, in the movie Last Year at Marianbad.

 The Game of Nim
Nim is a simple game of finite possibilities (unlike chess, say, where the possibilities appear to border on the infinite).
Nim's playing field varies from one to at least a dozen rows, and the number of counters in a row can vary from one to as much as two dozen.
The interesting thing about the book, however, is that it treats nim as a children's stick game even though it's the only one of these games where the advantage goes not to the nimble fingers, but the nimble minds.

The Game of Nim   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
In a game of nim where you have one nim heap, and you are allowed to remove from 1 to 4 objects at a time, you can win if you leave the heap with a multiple of 5 objects after your turn.
In a game of nim that involves nim heaps where you can take as many objects as you want from any one of the heaps during your turn, you need to be able to compute a nim sum, that characterizes the configuration of the game.
Note that if the configuration you are given has a nim sum not equal to 0, there always is a move that creates a new configuration with a nim sum of 0.

The answer is determined by the "nim sum" of the piles.
The "nim sum" of r piles with m1 elements in the 1st pile, m2 elements in the 2nd pile,..., mr elements in the last (r-th) pile, is obtained as follows:
define the nim sum G(m1,m2,...,mr) of the position to be the number whose binary digits are the entries in the nim sum vector reduced (mod 2).

Two Player Mathematical Games - Combinatorial Games - Numericana
Nim is superficially similar to some ancient games, but it's not clear whether it was actually played exactly this way before Bouton's analysis...
In normal Nim, the "components" are rows and the rules of Nim state essentially that a legal move consists of eliminating a component or replacing it by a strictly smaller one.
In standard Nim, you will always lower the size of the row you play (a so-called "canonical move"), but you may convince yourself that allowing some (noncanonical) Nim moves which increase the size of a row will not change the outcome of the game in perfect play (provided we know the game eventually terminates).

Standard NIM modules are required to have a height of 8.75", and must have a width which is a multiple of 1.35".
The power supply, which is in general, detachable from the NIM bin, is required to deliver voltages of +6 V, -6 V, +12 V, -12 V, +24 V, and -24 V. The standard NIM power connectors and pinouts are shown the Bin Connector Diagram, Module Connector Diagram and Pin/Function Table.

java.net: Java Tech: An Intelligent Nim Computer Game, Part 1
The game of Nim typically involves two players and a pile of matches, stones, marbles, or some other kind of objects.
In Nim, this function is simple: return 1 if a terminal configuration node indicates Player A to be the winner, or -1 if Player B is shown to be the winner.
Although that method call is not chosen when the code fragment executes, it illustrates an important point that must be considered in the console-based and GUI-based versions of Nim: scenarios exist where all child nodes have the same minimax number.
