A Nimbostratus is a (A visible mass of water or ice particles suspended at a considerable altitude) cloud of the class characterized by a formless layer that is almost uniformly dark gray; it is a rain cloud of the layer type, of low altitude, usually below 8000 ft (2400 m).
Compare nimbostratus clouds with (A large dark low cloud) stratus, (A stratus cloud at an intermediate altitude of 2 or 3 miles) altostratus and (A thin uniform layer of hazy cloud at high altitude) cirrostratus.
Other typical precipitation bearing clouds are (A dark cloud of great vertical extent charged with electricity; associated with thunderstorms) cumulonimbus.

Note the extremely uniform and featureless nimbostratus cloud which is dropping snow on the ground.
This detail is important because the fact that it is raining is what make these clouds nimbostratus rather than just stratus clouds.

The under surface of Nimbostratus is often partially or totally hidden by low ragged clouds (pannus - stratus of bad weather) which forms at or below the base of the Nimbostratus and change shape rapidly (Plate 14).
Nimbostratus usually appears as an extensive, low, dark gray layer, with a very diffuse base from which rain, snow or ice pellets fall continuously, without necessarily reaching the ground (Plates 24 and 25).
In the tropics particularly during short lulls in the rainfall, Nimbostratus can be seen breaking up into several different layers which rapidly merge again.
