  Hoplophoneus
One of the earliest ancestors of the cat family, the Felidae, Hoplophoneus was a member of the family Nimravidae.
The difference between the Nimravidae and the Felidae is in the structure of the bones which contain the small bones of the inner ear: the incus, malleus, and stapes.
In the Nimravidae, there is no trace of this auditory bulla, indicating a structure made of cartridge once housed the bones of the inner ear.

The Nimravidae were a separate family of cat-like animals that evolved parallel to the true cats (Felidae).
The common ancestor of the Nimravidae and the Felidae was the Viverravidae (feline-like) group of miacids some 55 million years ago in the late Eocene.
The lion-sized Barbourofelis was one of the most recent members of the Nimravidae family.

Lioncrusher's Domain -- Family Nimravidae (The False Sabre-toothed Cats or Paleofelids)
While it is now known that the nimravids are actually a separate family of cat-like animals that evolved parallel to the true cats, there had been much confusion about placement of the nimravids.
Some archaic sources place Nimravidae with the true sabre-toothed cats as a subfamily of Felidae.
The family Nimravidae was thought to have diverged from the ancestors of the true cats during the early Eocene, about 55 million years ago.

 Machaerodus - LoveToKnow 1911
MACHAERODUS, or MACHAIRODUS, the typical genus of a group of long-tusked extinct cats, commonly known as sabretooths.
Although best regarded as a sub-family (Machaerodontinae) of the Felidae, they are sometimes referred to a separate family under the name Nimravidae (see CARNIVORA).
The later forms, as well as some of the earlier ones, are more specialized as regards dentition than the modern Felidae, although in several other respects they exhibit more primitive features.

 Lioncrusher's Domain -- Order Carnivora
In the Feloidea superfamily, there is the Felidae (cats), Herpestidae (mongooses), Hyaenidae (hyenas), Viverridae (civets), and Eupleridae (Malagasy carnivores), as well as the extinct family Nimravidae (paleofelids).
Some sources place the herpestids and viverrids in the same family; however, there are significant morphological and behavioral differences between the two groups, enough to warrant them being placed in their own respective families rather than lumped together under Viverridae.
The Nimravidae (sabre-toothed cats) in the Feliformia group, and the Amphicyonidae (bear-dogs) in the Caniformia group, became extinct in the Pliocene (4-5 mya), along with the Creodonts.
