Hawker-Siddeley Nimrod - The Black Vault Encyclopedia Project   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The Nimrod serves the RAF in two variants: the R1 variant in a reconnaissance and electronic intelligence gathering capacity (ELINT), and the MR2 variant in the Maritime Reconnaissance role.
The Nimrod R1 is based at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire, England and flown by 51 Sqn.
The Nimrod MR2 is based at RAF Kinloss in Scotland and flown by 201, 120 and 42(R) Sqns.

The BAe Nimrod MR2 was designed from the outset as a long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine aircraft to replace the Shackleton, which was itself a development of the Lancaster bomber.
However, although the Nimrod MR2s carried some electronic surveillance equipment and an extensive communications fit, they lacked any electro-optical or infrared cameras and during the Cold War this equipment was considered unnecessary for their MPA role — lack of sufficient finance probably also contributed to this decision.
The Nimrods were later used to assist AC-130 Spectre Gunships and RAF Tornado GR4 aircraft by pinpointing targets with their sensors and then relaying the targeting data to the attacking aircraft.

To describe the Nimrod MRA4 simply as a refurbished Nimrod MR2 is to ignore the fact that the aircraft that will eventually emerge is to all intents and purposes a new aircraft.
To put it mildly, the Nimrod MRA4 programme was and still is very ambitious and BAe Systems appear to have completely under-estimated the complexity and quantity of work necessary to achieve their proposal, together with the associated costs.
