EO News: Scientists Say Adios to La Niña - May 9, 2000
La Nina, the large area of cold water in the Pacific Ocean widely blamed for last summer's drought and often related to an increase in the number of hurricanes that make landfall, appears to be on its last legs.
Suddenly during May of 1998, the warm waters of El Nino were replaced by the cold water phenomenon known as La Nina which has persisted till now.
Historically, another consequence of La Nina is an increase in the number of hurricanes that make landfall in the U.S. The two hurricanes that made landfall and caused the disastrous flooding along the North Carolina coast are consistent with that trend.

Purdue Study: La Nina Cycle Puts New Twist On Tornado Season
La Nina, which means "the little girl," is characterized by unusually cold ocean temperatures in the eastern tropical Pacific, as compared to El Nino, which is characterized by unusually warm temperatures in the same waters.
In her study, she calculated the positions and strengths of the polar and subtropical jet streams during El Nino and La Nina events from 1916 to 1996 to study the effect on the distribution and strength of tornadoes in the tornado alley region of the United States.
By contrast, during a La Nina event, the subtropical jet -- the jet stream that brings warm moist air from the south -- shifts to the far north, bringing an influx of warmth and moisture to these regions, and increasing the odds for tornadoes, Zurn-Birkhimer says.

May 19, 2003 — On the heels of El Niño’s departure the world could soon be facing the return of La Niña say scientists at NOAA.
By early May sea-surface temperatures were 0.5 to 1 degree C (1 to 2 degrees F) below average across the east-central equatorial Pacific.
Although there is some uncertainty in the model forecasts, the dominant trend is for the cooling in the tropical Pacific to continue, and for La Niña to develop during the summer.

La Nina, a huge pool of cold water off the Pacific Coast, "appears to be on its last legs" and will have a difficult time sustaining itself much longer, NASA climate researchers said.
NASA said a sudden change was seen in May of 1998 when warm El Nino waters were replaced by the colder waters of La Nina.
La Nina is also blamed for causing more hurricanes to hit land, such as the pair that caused serious flooding in North Carolina last year.

While there may be no scientific way to link a specific hurricane to a particular cause such as La Niña, the 1995-96 La Niña brought to America’s eastern shoreline one of the most active and destructive hurricane seasons in a century — 19 named storms, 11 of which were hurricanes.
Effects may also differ depending on whether the La Niña is strong (pronounced), moderate, or weak.
Scientists increasingly are debating the proposition that global greenhouse warming may be causing more frequent and intense El Niños (the ENSO warm phase) and less frequent La Niñas (the cold phase).

What is La Nina? From Tampa Bay Online
A La Niña effect may be defined as a drop in average sea-surface temperatures to more than 0.4 degrees C (0.7 degrees F) below normal, lasting at least six months, across a specified part of the eastern tropical Pacific (5 N- 5 S latitude, 120-170 W longitude).
When La Niña forms, the hurricane season is affected as the cooling water creates dramatic changes in the upper-level air currents that play a major role in storm development.
La Niña conditions may persist for as long as two years.

 NOAA News Online (Story 200)
NOAA forecasters predict short-term relief in sight, with rain coming and cooler temperatures coming as early as next week, but a resurging La Niña may contribute to drought conditions throughout the summer and possibly into the fall.
The recent heat and the poor showing of rain may be the result of a "blocking ridge" of high pressure that is pumping the three H's up from the south and fending off rain from the drought areas, said Ants Leetmaa, director of NOAA's Climate Prediction Center.
La Niña, the climatic opposite of El Niño, is defined as cooler than normal sea-surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean that impact global weather patterns.

Current NOAA estimates for both the 30 day and the 90 day outlooks (March - May) are heavily weighted by the LA Nina event, calling for increased odds of above normal precipitation and below normal temperatures, particularly in the central and northern sections of the state.
