The Festival of Lessons and Carols, a traditional candlelight celebration of the coming of Christmas, is based on the famed Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols performed each year since 1918 by the King's College Choir at Cambridge University in England.
The strength and appeal of the Lessons and Carols derives from the repetition of a familiar tale in the poetic language of the King James translation, interwoven with Advent and Christmas carols and hymns.
Readers of the Lessons are drawn from the Concert Chorale, Wesleyan faculty, staff, and students, members of the Buckhannon community, and a representative of the Wesleyan Alumni Council.

The Service of Nine Lessons and Carols is of British origin, usually consisting of nine lessons (beginning with the Old Testament and working through to the beginning of the Gospel of Saint John) each followed by a carol.
The readings (lessons) are normally proclaimed in a strict order, and by a hierarchy of readers, beginning with the humblest reader (perhaps a young chorister) and progressing through the bishop (if done in a cathedral), who always reads from Saint John's Gospel.
This is definitely the tradition, where certain carols were sung by the congregation and other carols (or meditations) were offered by choirs or even soloists.

Perhaps, for many, like myself, Christmas really begins at 3:00 pm on Christmas Eve when the annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is broadcast by BBC Radio direct from Kings College Chapel in Cambridge.
Another popular Kings figure, David Willcocks, is remembered, too, and he is represented by two of his carol arrangements: 'God rest you merry, gentlemen' and 'I saw three ships.' That other fine Kings' organist, Philip Ledger, is represented by his beautiful arrangement of the Sussex Carol.
Clearly, no recording could replace the immediacy of the real event but this recording might be regarded as an introduction in the days preceding Christmas or as an alternative if for some reason one has to miss hearing it on the radio or seeing it later on TV.
