Most would say Nine Lives, the clever title of the first Aerosmith album in four years, is an understatement -- this band has been through so much trouble it's quite surprising that this album was even released at all.
While the album may have more ballads than the average Aero recording, all the tunes are extremely catchy and will be in the listener's head for days to come.
Instead of the usual hard-rocking music that the band has produced on their last two albums, the album returns to the classic '70s sound Aerosmith remarkably retains, combined with the blues style of their 1987 release, Permanent Vacation.

This improvement is because Aerosmith admirably varies, expands, and solidifies their sound, perhaps spurred on by their new alliance with producer Jack Douglas, who would help guide the band’s next several studio efforts.
Another highlight on an album full of highlights is the catchy r&b of “No More No More,” whose serious lyrics about the downside of the rock n’ roll lifestyle shows the flip side to the band's usual good time obsessions with sex, drugs, and double entendres.
Aerosmith had steadily improved with each release, developing their craft while seizing a major share of the American hard rock market.

During the first decade of its career, Aerosmith was one of the most popular hard-rock bands in America, striking a flamboyant middle ground between the cool, bluesy swagger of the Rolling Stones and the more campy, glam-metal approach of the New York Dolls and Mott the Hoople.
With 1975's Toys in the Attic, considered by most to be Aerosmith's best album, the group achieved a new level of success, both artistically and commercially.
