Boiling water reactor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A boiling water reactor (BWR) is a light water reactor design used in some nuclear power stations.
Like the pressurized water reactor, the BWR reactor core continues to produce heat from radioactive decay after the fission reactions have stopped, making nuclear meltdown possible in the event that all safety systems have failed and the core does not receive coolant.
It has many similarities to the pressurized water reactor, except that in a BWR the steam going to the turbine is produced in the reactor core rather than in a steam generator or heat exchanger.

 Statement of Corbin A
From an electric reliability standpoint, nuclear power contributes large amounts of electricity in those areas of the country most prone to lapses in electric reliability as a result of transmission and power supply constraints.
In the two nuclear plant sales approved to date, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has recognized the public health and safety implications of closing plants prematurely and has required full funding of decommissioning trust funds as a condition of license transfers that they have approved to date.
Because of the decommissioning liabilities associated with nuclear plants, the buyers of these plants are requiring current plant owners to fully fund the projected cost of decommissioning as part of the sales agreement.

The Pickering Nuclear Generating Station is one of the oldest operating nuclear stations in the world and the oldest nuclear plant in Canada.
A simple interpretation of the cause of the Three Mile Island nuclear accident in Pennsylvania in March, 1979 is that it was initiated by an equipment failure, a valve that failed to close, compounded by several operator errors.

 Comments of Eliot Spitzer
Constellation Nuclear and Nine Mile Point NS are wholly owned power-generating subsidiaries of Constellation Energy Group, Inc. The Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation ("Niagara Mohawk") owns all of Nine Mile One and has a 41% interest in Nine Mile Two.
On September 20, 2001, Constellation Nuclear, Nine Mile Point NS and the DPS Staff filed a Joint Proposal intended to settle various issues concerning operation of the plants after transfer of ownership ("Constellation Joint Proposal").
Niagara Mohawk indicated in May 2001 that it had $1.277 billion in Nine Mile One and Two costs on its books, and that after applying the proceeds from the sale of its interests and absorbing $123 million of the loss as here, it would have $686 million in stranded costs.

American Scientist Online - March Madness
The accident at Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station in Pennsylvania on March 28, 1979, was "the single most important event in the fifty-year history of nuclear power regulation in the United States," says J. Samuel Walker.
Many critics of nuclear power point to the accident as a turning point for the industry, noting that no new plants have since been ordered in the United States and that many planned in prior years were subsequently canceled.
The energy surge into the steam-generating system increased pressure in the reactor coolant system and in a device called the pressurizer, causing the pilot-operated relief valve (PORV) to open to relieve that pressure.

In the aftermath of the Three Mile Island accident, the worst commercial nuclear accident in U.S. history, officials from the nuclear industry and the government grew fond of noting that no one was killed or injured.
