  Nine worlds
The first level: Asgard, world of the Aesir; Vanaheim, land of the Vanir; and Alfheim, land of the light elves.
The third level: Hel, Realm of the dead; and Niflheim, World of the dead.
If Hel and Niflheim comprised one world, as is suggested in some sources, the ninth may have been Muspelheim (Muspell), the land of the fire giants.

Ultramyth - Products - Nine Worlds
Nine Worlds is a d20 fantasy campaign setting with a distinct nordic flavour.
Based on and inspired by the mythological worlds of the Old Norse cosmology, Nine Worlds spans the great Ash tree, Yggdrasil, from Asgard and Alfheim in its upermost branches, to the depths of Nifelheim and the realm of Hel beneath its roots.
Nine Worlds follows in Ultramyth's tradition of promoting good role-playing, and in addition to presenting a host of new material, will dedicate generous amounts to detailing role-playing considerations in a Norse world.

Runes and the Nine Worlds of Yggdrasil   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Nine runes are utilised, but the way the runes are placed is different, for they are not in Worlds, but in positions that place them according to the Upper or Heaven Plane, Middle or Earth Plane, and Lower or Subterranean Plane.
Because the runes are grouped in aettir (families) of eight, to assign a rune from each aettir to each of the Nine Worlds requires using the following aettir's first rune as one of the nine.
The worlds of the vertical axis of the cosmos have to do with the spirit realm, as the Worlds of the four directions have to do with the elemental forces that make up the Earth plane.

In the south a world of fire lay, Muspellsheim, and from there poisonous rivers of fire and brimstone ran.
As the two worlds merged a part of the void got filled with ice and frost, but warm winds from the south melted part of the ice and from the melted ice the giant Ymir was born.

RPGnet: The Inside Scoop on Gaming
In Norse times, I don't know that they were up on the "round world" idea, which is one of the reasons that one could sail to Jotunhiem, or travel nine days north and then go down...
Just a quick thought regarding travel that came as I was scanning the posts: If all these worlds are boughs of Yggdrasil maybe the only way to get from one to the other would be to 'tap' into the tree and ride the nutrient stream through to the next world.
Now I had finalized Yggdrasil, and was very comfortable with its look, the look of the nine worlds, how to traverse them, and also the development of an important figure who bridges the gap between the first campaign and the new one.

RPGnet: Review of Nine Worlds: The Game of Cosmic Myth
Nine Worlds’ setting presents many standard fantasy genre themes, though with a conceptual focus bordering on the abstract that may have a steep learning curve, especially for those used to game systems employing shopping lists of character classes employing standard genre based archetypes.
Furthermore Nine Worlds, taken at a glance, gives the impression the author is familiar with the Tarot and it’s basic associations.
Positives: Nine Worlds is presented as fantasy but actually skirts the edges of supers role-playing, it is edgy and very conceptual, and alas it may not be to everyone‘s taste or liking.

Wotan (Odin) tied himself to the World Tree, Yggdrasil, and remained there for nine days and nights, whereupon the Runes were revealed to his mind.
It is my opinion that "Wotan" is the "self." The World Tree, then, represents the nine realms - comprising the known, the unknown, and the unknowable - where the "self" finds its existence.
