The name Ninety Mile Beach is a misnomer—it is actually 88 km (55 miles) long.
In 1932, Ninety Mile Beach was used as the runway for some of the earliest airmail services between Australia and New Zealand.

At a distance of 18 miles, near the mouth of the Waihi Stream, is an outcrop of lignite interbedded in the consolidated sand.
About 40 miles from the southern end is the Bluff, a patch of ellipsoidal-shaped submarine lava flows with bands of quartz, and connected to the mainland at low tide by a sand platform.

In 1798, ten years after the first settlement at Sydney, George Bass examined thirty miles of the long beach he named the Ninety Mile, and actually deduced that lagoons lay behind the low dune range, but the natives he saw from a distance appeared so hostile that he did not attempt to explore ashore.
Attempts were made to land animals on the Ninety Mile Beach in the vicinity of the present Lake Reeve ranch, but this was impractical, and some of the horses escaped to breed into brumbies, which roamed the area until just before the First World War.
In 1970 the sealed road from Golden Beach road to Loch Sport was completed by the Shire of Rosedale, while the same year saw the construction of the new causeway from Wallaby Street across Lake Reeve, also built by the shire.
