Ninilchik is on the west side of the Kenai Peninsula on the Sterling Highway, 61 km (38 miles) southwest of the Kenai, and 100 air miles southwest of Anchorage.
The word "Ninilchik" may mean "a lodge by the river" in the Dena'ina language.
Ninilchik as a town is not yet incorporated, so it remains under the jurisdiction of the Kenai Peninsula Borough (KPB).
