Computer Arts - Profile: Ninja Tune
Ninja Tune was set up in 1990 by Matt Black and Jon Moore, better known as DJ duo Coldcut.
As an in-house graphic designer at Ninja, Foakes’ job is diverse to say the least – and he gets a chance to be as experimental as the acts he designs for.
On to the bigger picture, in terms of keeping Ninja’s identity focused and consistent, Foakes has a definite opinion on how a brand should be formed and maintained.

Instrumental hip-hop may have sustained Ninja Tune for its first 10 years, but the UK hip-hop scene has started to find its own original voice (one with a thick Jamaican patois), and the US underground is now turning out artists who are just too incredible for Ninja Tune to ignore.

CD Review of Various Artists - ZEN CD - A Ninja Tune Retrospective/ A Retrospective of Ninja Tune Remixes on Ninja Tune ...
As such, not only some of Ninja’s musicians regularly play jazz, but their habitual collaboration with DJs has without any doubt contributed to re-shape the role of the turntablist as the ‘new jazz musician’ in being.
Ninja’s brand-new releases ‘ZEN CD — A Ninja Tune Retrospective’ (ZEN CD85) and ‘ZEN RMX — A Retrospective of Ninja Tune Remixes’ (ZEN CD85R,) out February 9th, are the first ‘Greatest-Hits’ style compilation in a decade of such imaginary design in music.
Ninja is definitely setting the pace to a new form of fusion in jazz, encompassing the DJs as part of the ensemble, the turntables allowed to jam with the other instruments, and not secluded to play a musical carpet.

For although Ninja is home to the kind of maverick, original talent that is almost always one of a kind, it's also true to say that virtually all its artists share a similar sensibility.
But that's not the sum total of Ninja Tune, for there's a another side to its sensibility that is no less perfectionist but in less of a hurry, perhaps, to change the world.
Where the two sides of the Ninja come together – in a riot of colour, energy and hilarity – is amply documented by Zen RMX and Zen DVD.

Ninja Tune Records - Label Profile - Stylus Magazine
Releases from Funki Porcini, The Herbaliser, DJ Vadim and the arrival of young, future superstar Amon Tobin had ear-marked Ninja Tune as a label to look out for, with each release improving on the last.
In the Late 90s, due to the success of the Herbalisers’; hip-hop flavoured albums, Ninja Tune expanded on their sound by developing the Big Dada offshoot label – which now releases albums from the likes of the Infesticons, Saul Williams, and cLOUDDEAD.
Ninja Tune then went on to act as a distributor for the west coast of the US hip-hop label Quannum projects, releasing albums by Blackalicious, Latryx and DJ Shadow to an eager European audience.

Launched in 1994, UK label Ninja Tune established a home on the more intelligent end of the breakbeat, nu jazz and hip-hop axis.
For a while Ninja also ran sub-label Ntone which allowed founders Matt Black and Jonathan More (aka Coldcut) to indulge their soft spot for trippy ambient.
But most of Ninja's output has appeared on its main label and with a sound spanning from the dancefloor to the lounge room the two Zen releases - both double CD sets - mark the label's 10th anniversary.

Synonymous with enduring quality and originality, a deep respect for the Ninja Tune name has been engraved on my psyche since my developmental years.
I can recall a distant time a good decade ago where, as a muddled and idealistic teen, some friends and I first happened upon the concept, unsure whether "Ninja Tune" referred to a producer, an album or even a type of music.
Nowadays, the Ninja Tune label has become a household name in Montreal, at least in the trendy Plateau, largely due to the efforts of Philippa Klein and Jeff Waye who, seven years ago, opened the North American headquarters for the London-based label here.
