News in Science - Woohoo! New owl species found - 04/09/2002
Discovering a new species was unexpected, said Mr Jerry Olsen of the University of Canberra's Applied Ecology Research Group, who identified the owl with co-researcher Ms Susan Trost.
Owls' vocalisations are inherited and have little variation in dialect, so they are diagnostic of species and critical to the study of owl taxonomy.
The call of this new owl is a monosyllabic 'who' repeated about every three seconds and quite unlike the repeated 'cluck-cluck-cluck' made by the Australian Ninox or the disyllabic notes made by most Ninox, including others in the Wallacea region.
