The Nintendo 64DD (Disk Drive) was announced around the release of the main unit.
Unfortunately Nintendo was having a difficult enough time struggling to support the Nintendo 64.
Fortunately, it was a learning experience for Nintendo where it had the opportunity to discover and refine several innovations including the internal clock, rewritable media, and the potential of online gaming.

The 64DD plugged into the EXTension Port found underneath the Nintendo 64.The unit was essentially the next generation equivalent of the Famicom Disk System.
The Nintendo 64 Disks would be bootable, meaning that they can be used without a cartridge in the system (although they can also be used in conjunction with a cartridge).

OOt was suppose to be on a 64DD disk, but they dropped the idea …for the best I think.
I thought that the OOT master quest was what was released on the 64DD, but I could be mistaken.
nintendo was planning to release the 64DD along with zelda OOT, but the drive was born dead and OOt was relased on a regular N64 cartridge (a bit heavy in comparison with the regular ones)

If I recall correctly the keyboard and mouse were for the 64DD edition of Mario Paint, one of only a handful of games ever released for it.
A 64DD keyboard released by Randnet in partnership with Nintendo was developed to ease the pain of writing e-mails and chatting with the RandnetDD software.
