Nintendo Power's debut issue came out in the later part of spring in 1988, kicking off a hugely successful run that'd both promote whatever Nintendo wanted to promote while giving lots of gaming fans lots of pretty pictures to look at.
Nintendo was a much smaller entity back then, and it showed in the grassroots way these magazines were written.
Nintendo wanted their magazine to be as colorful as possible, and this unfortunately extended to the underbelly of some of the text sections.

They used to also devote half of one of the two letters pages to a "Power Player", some guy who either thought he was cool, or someone wrote in talking about some guy they know that they think is so cool, because he beat X number of games and got scores X high.

The Power Glove is a controller accessory for the Nintendo Entertainment System designed by the team of Grant Goddard and Sam Davis for Abrams/Gentile Entertainment, made by Mattel in the United States and PAX in Japan.
Only two games were released with specific features for use with the Power Glove, Super Glove Ball, a 3D Breakout clone, and Bad Street Brawler, a difficult to control Double Dragon clone, playable with the standard NES controller, but allowing exclusive moves with the glove.
An article in Nintendo Power magazine, released after the film, featured an interview with "Krueger" actor Robert Englund, who claimed he had installed "retractable blades" on his own Power Glove at home.

There were a couple that I remember that sent you on trips, some to Nintendo HQ, and I think one was a trip to E3.
Reggie and Nester comics need to be integrated into Nintendo Power asap.
I think it was off Nintendo's website, but I somehow got 2nd place in a contest that involved answering 100 Nintendo-related questions, and won a copy of Waverace 64 (the best Waverace so far, BTW).

Still was one of the best gaming mags out there because despite being only about Nintendo, they wherent afraid to trash games for their system that sucked.
However, creating Nintendo Power was Nintendo's way of saying that they wanted you to pay for those tips, tricks, etc. Before Nintendo Power, you could just join the Nintnedo Fun Club for free and get a monthly newsletter with this sort of information.
Unlike 'The Wizard' Nintendo Power actually had value in that it offered other things such as those comics and strategy guides.
