Nintendo would never achieve market leadership in Europe and did not manage to do so in the U.S. until 1994, benefiting from Sega pulling out of the market and its continued production of SNES and its games well after the 32-bit era of gaming had started.
By 1996, the 16-bit era of gaming had ended, and a new generation of consoles, including Nintendo's own Nintendo 64, caused the popularity of the SNES to wane.
Nintendo took the same stance against the distribution of SNES ROM image files and emulation as it did with the NES, insisting that they represented flagrant software piracy.

Coleco, Tomy, Entex, Mattel, Tiger, and Nintendo would be the most prolific among companies that produced handheld and portable games based on existing arcade games during this era, with Coleco pulling out all the stops in making their adaptations mimic the very look of the machines that the original games had played in.
Nintendo pioneered the use of a third-party licensing system that would help stem the control of the amount and quality of games being released for their NES.
In this era came the wonders of game emulation programs that talented programmers would develop, not only for personal computers but also for game systems, that would allow owners of such systems to enjoy yesterday's greatest games from the various systems and computers that they would be played on.

While NEC would claim that they started the 16-Bit Era with the TG16, many historians (including myself) credit Sega with ushering in that period via their 16-bit Sega Genesis console, which was introduced in 1989, but didn't gain a lot of support until 1990.
Nintendo would back out of the Sony deal at the last minute, and that decision (as many of you know) would later come back to haunt them.
Nintendo would keep plugging away with SNES as time went on and Nintendo would eventually pull even or just slightly ahead of Sega for 16-bit market share as the 16-Bit Era came to a close.

Whereas the earlier system had struggled in the PAL region and large parts of Asia, the SNES proved to be a global success, albeit one that could not match its predecessor's popularity in Southeast Asia and North America—due in part to increased competition from Sega's Mega Drive console (released in North America as the Genesis).
Masayuki Uemura, the man responsible for designing the Famicom several years earlier, was put in charge of the design of the console and the Super Famicom was released in Japan on November 21, 1990 for ¥25,000 ($210 USD).

 Nintendo Censorship
Nintendo of America maintained a tight control over game content by insisting that every video game produced by a third-party publisher be pre-screened and approved by NOA censors before release.
The ESRB ratings allowed Nintendo to gradually relax their censorship practices, for now they could legitimately argue that their games were being targeted to specific age groups, rather than "children" as a whole.
The reason for this is because Nintendo of America still largely markets their titles towards a youth market, and in some cases in order to win an "E for everyone" rating from the ESRB the company must remove a few offensive articles from a Japanese edition before its US release.

Nintendo have already had success with this business strategy with its Nintendo DS handheld console, which despite being technologically inferior to the Sony Playstation Portable, is currently winning the battle of the handhelds due to its touch screen interface and unique game experiences.
Nintendo's Wii is scheduled to be released in North and Latin America on November 19, 2006, Japan on December 2, 2006, Australia on December 7, 2006 and in Europe on December 8, 2006.

 Perspective - Video Games
A major reason as to why games have slipped so much over the years is because Nintendo, who used to be the only big player, lost its monopoly in the video game industry.
Nintendo's policy was that if you wanted to make a game for their system, you had to become a licensee and everything you did had to be approved by them.
Over the years Nintendo lost its market share due to legal issues and game companies no longer had to abide by this strict policy.
