The headwaters of the Missouri are in the Rocky Mountains of southwestern Montana, near the continental divide.
The entire Missouri River watershed was acquired from the French by the United States in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase and explored by the Lewis and Clark Expedition, which successfully used the river in exploring for a route to the Pacific Ocean.
This federally-designated "Wild and Scenic River" is among the last unspoiled stretches of the Missouri, and exhibits the islands, bars, chutes and snags that once characterized the "Mighty Mo".

Niobrara is one of the oldest towns in the state and is located directly on the Lewis and Clark Trail, is on the Outlaw Trail Scenic Byway and on the stretch federally designated as a recreational and scenic river.
Niobrara is also known as one of the newest towns in the state because it was relocated twice due to the encroaching waters of the Missouri river, most recently in the mid 70s.
Niobrara was founded on June 7, 1856 at the confluence of the Niobrara and Missouri Rivers by a group of men headed by Dr. Benneville Yeakel Shelly.

 GORP - Canoeing on Nebraska's Niobrara River
The Niobrara, or"Running Water" as it was known to the native Sioux, snakes its way from eastern Wyoming into northwestern Nebraska, running for 300 miles into the namesake village of Niobrara where it empties into the Missouri River.
The Niobrara River valley has long been a fertile one and the surrounding Sandhills were once home to more than 20 prehistoric mammals.

 Cherry County
The pin-connected Pratt through truss was the bridge of choice for medium-scale river crossings in Nebraska during the early 20th century, as the Cherry County Commissioners realized in 1916.
Due in part to this natural calamity, the Niobrara River bridges represent the best-preserved group of trusses in the state.
It is historically significant as a regionally important crossing of the Niobrara River and as one of the few state aid trusses remaining in Nebraska.

 Conservancy methodically buys easements along Niobrara riverfront
The Niobrara Council, which recently voted to donate $40,000 toward the conservancy's recent conservation easement, is negotiating three or four smaller conservation easements of its own.
It is the proposal that the council would contribute their $50,000 from the councils’ environmental trust fund grant to the Egelhoff easement project that the TNC is currently fundraising for.

Every summer their is a great deal of tourism, but when you are on the river you are pretty much, just with the company that you are with already.
When you are on the river their are stops along the way which can be rather interesting my favorite being Smith Falls, which just happens to the tallest water fall along the river.
While you are on the river you have a few options, the main being where you stay, and what you do while you are on the river.
