  Nipmuc Indian Tribe History
Hassanamesit seems to have been their principal village in 1674, but their villages had no apparent political connection, and the different parts of their territory were subject to their more powerful neighbors, the Massachuset, Wampanoag, Narraganset, and Mohegan, and even tributary to the Mohawk.
The Nashua, dwelling farther north, are sometimes classed with the Nipmuc, but were rather a distinct body.
The New England missionaries had 7 villages of Christian Indians among them in 1674; but on the outbreak of King Philip's war in the next year almost all of them joined the hostile tribes, and at its close fled to Canada or westward to the Mahican and other tribes on the Hudson.

Nipmuc social relations were probably based on the mother's family line (meaning they were matrilineal).
In southern Nipmuc country, there is clear evidence of a network of family groups that survived and intermarried over several generations during the century after the Civil War.
But whether or not the Nipmuc eventually succeed in regaining their tribal status in the eyes of the United States government, it is clear that further understanding insight into their history can only be gained through further understanding of their deep and strong ties to their homelands.

 NativeTech: Nipmuc Splint Basketry
Nipmucs, like the Mohegans, Pequots, Niantics, and Wampanoags living in region east of the Connecticut River, eventually used a draw knife, (a blade with a handle at either end held with both hands), to shave down woodsplints; so the Nipmuc's basket splints had squared edges.
Nipmuc baskets were usually painted in two colors, using combinations of either brown or blue with orange, pink or red.
Nipmucs also began using different colors at this time, blue instead of brown, either for particular buyers or because that paint was easier to get.

Narragansett Language and the Narragansett Indian Tribe (Nipmuc, Mohegans, Nanigansek)
People: The Narragansett are considered by most historians to be a sub-tribe of the Mohegans, though their language may have been closer to that of the Wampanoag.
However, due to heavy population losses and aggressive colonial expansion, the Indian tribes of New England were scattered, merged, and assimilated to such a degree that they lost their languages and much of their individual tribal characters.
In particular, the Narragansett, Nipmuc, and Niantic tribes were driven together under the general Mohegan rubric; other Narragansetts took refuge with the Abenakis or Stockbridge Indians, assimilating into those cultures.

 FR Doc 04-14394
Occasional associations of Dudley/Webster Nipmuc descendants with Hassanamisco are mentioned by external observers during the period from 1900 to 1979, but these occurred primarily in the context of pan-Indian activities in New England rather than being identifications of an Indian entity which was antecedent to the current petitioner, 69A.
The evolving ``governing documents'' of the period are consistent with the process of expanding the definition of the Nipmuc group she was using beyond the Hassanamisco to include families with which she had little or no previous contact.
Therefore, petitioner 69A, The Nipmuc Nation, does not satisfy the requirements to be acknowledged as an Indian tribe with a government-to-government relationship with the United States.
