The North American Indian group known as the Nipmucks was situated in south-central New England and, during the early years of Puritan colonization, remained on the fringes of the expanding white settlements.

Spanning the years between the Nipmucks' first encounters with whites until the final disposal of their lands, this history focuses on Indian-white relations, the position or status of the Nipmucks relative to the other major New England tribes, and their social and political alliances.

For the FD, 69B submitted a considerable amount of documentation, the majority of which was retrospective, dealing with Dudley/Webster Indians who lived during the 19th century, rather than identifications of a Dudley/Webster entity that continued to exist from 1900 to the present as required by the regulations.
Petitioner 69B submitted a number of 20th century ``last of the Nipmuck'' articles, many of which identified an individual as having Nipmuc ancestry, often specifying Dudley/Webster Nipmuc ancestry, but none of them identified any continuing Nipmuc entity, group, settlement, or community to which the individual was a part.

The Chaubunagungamaug Band of Nipmuck Indians (CBNI) is one of two bands of the historic Nipmuck Indian tribe with roots in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island.
To ensure that the band’s position was accurately reflected, to clarify misinformation, and to monitor the public debate, the public relations strategy included regular attendance at local town meetings and public hearings in cities and towns in Massachusetts and Connecticut where federal recognition and gaming were discussed.
When CBNI tribal leaders met with the Bureau of Indian Affairs to review the status of their petition for federal recognition, they were commended for their response to concerns raised by the community and for working collaboratively with stakeholders.
