Niqqud - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Hebrew orthography, Niqqud or Nikkud (Standard Hebrew נִקּוּד, Biblical Hebrew נְקֻדּוֹת, Tiberian Hebrew Nəquddôṯ "vowels") is the system of diacritical vowel points (or vowel marks) in the Hebrew alphabet.
Niqqud marks are small compared to the consonants they are positioned adjacent to, and thus can be added, without requiring the retranscription of texts whose writers did not anticipate their eventual addition.
This table uses the consonants ב, ח or ש, where appropriate, to demonstrate where the niqqud is placed in relation to the consonant it is pronounced after.

The number of letters in the Hebrew alphabet, their order, their names, and their phonetic values are virtually identical to those of the Aramaic alphabet, as both Hebrews and Arameans borrowed the Phoenician alphabet for their uses during the end of the 2nd millennium BC.
A diacritical mark or diacritic, sometimes called an accent mark, is a mark added to a letter to alter a words pronunciation or to distinguish between similar words.

Talk: Tetragrammaton - Open Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
A discussion from September 2004 is archived here (I left a number of minor discussions from the same period on the main page).
Lots of information about the Tetragrammaton with Niqqud in medieval texts was presented, and some of it made it way to the page, which was refactored as a result.
However, in order for it to do that one has to know Hebrew and see the precise niqqud, the hataf-segol under the yod etc. So, for the casual reader, this text is meaningless, while for the advanced reader, it is too short and uninformative.

Criticisms: It does not have extensive hypertext links between its various large collections, and it has also been criticized for poor proofreading and error-laden texts.
Tanakh is available as a keyed-in digital Hebrew text with vowels (niqqud) in all of the above software packages.

Bible - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
From the 800s to the 1400s, rabbinic Jewish scholars known as the Masoretes compared the text of all known Biblical manuscripts in an effort to create a unified and standardized text; a series of highly similar texts eventually emerged, and any of these texts are known as Masoretic Texts (MT).
The Masoretes also added vowel points (called niqqud) to the text, since the original text only contained consonants.
This sometimes required the selection of an interpretation, since words can differ only in their vowels, and thus the text can vary depending upon the choice of vowels to be inserted.

The Hebrew alphabet was in origin an abjad, in other words it had letters for consonants only, but means were later devised to indicate vowels, first by using consonant letters as matres lectionis, later by separate vowel points or niqqud.

Schwa - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In addition, the symbol ə is itself called schwa.
The word "schwa" (pronounced /ʃwɑː/) is from the Hebrew word שְׁוָא (šěwā’, /ʃəˈwaʔ/), meaning "nought"—it originally referred to one of the niqqud vowel points used with the Hebrew alphabet, which looks like a vertical pair of dots under a letter.
This sign has two uses: one to indicate the schwa vowel-sound and one to indicate the complete absence of a vowel.

Throughout history, two systems of Hebrew spelling have evolved: vocalized spelling and unvocalized spelling, with many variations within each system.
In vocalized spelling, called also ‘defective’ or ‘grammatical’ spelling, all of the vowels are indicated by diacritical vowel points (niqqud), and some of them also by vowel letters.
In unvocalized spelling, called also ‘plene’ spelling, the vowel points are omitted, but some of them are substituted by additional vowel letters (Waw and Yod).

How to use Hspell with...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
KDE versions prior to KDE 3.1.4 could communicate with hspell only in the ISO-8859-8 encoding, which cannot represent niqqud (KDE substitutes "?" for any niqqud character, thus erroneously making hspell see several words instead of one niqquded word).
One solution is to upgrade your KDE to a version later than 3.1.3.
Of course, if you're not using niqqud in your documents, or if you don't mind some harmless fikshushim when spell-checking seldom used niqquded words, you can ignore this problem.

(Note: This is not the Hebrew Bible's niqqud of יְהוָה)
The classical niqqud ("vocalization") for the Hebrew word for God (see Names of God in Judaism) in the Hebrew Bible within Judaism is יְהוָה with no exact English phonetical pronounciation fully possible.
While recognizing Judaism's policy against the formal pronunciation of the Tetragrammaton, some Christian scholars created a form of God’s Hebrew name that they believed might best represent the actual pronunciation of the Tetragrammaton.
