At the partition of India in 1947, the Nirankaris abandoned their centre in Rawalpindi and established themselves on the Indian side of the border in Chandigarh, from where their activities are administered to the present day.
Nirankaris were typically traders and shopkeepers, and these occupations they were expected to continue while focusing their attention on remembrance of the divine Name.

Because the Nirankari faith was born out of Sikhism there are many Nirankari followers who were followers of Sikhism.
The Nirankari faith is a spiritual movement that brings together people of all backgrounds and religions including Sikh, Hindu, Christian, etc. Nirankaris have belief in and respect for all prophets of the past from Ram to Jesus to Guru Nanak.

A resolution to this effect was passed at a conference held at Todar Mal Hall in Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib to start the party's election campaign for the forthcoming parliamentary elections.
It said because of this there was need to inquire into the violation afresh as the Sikhs were not satisfied with the earlier decision on the matter.

CHANDIGARH, April 14: The issue of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chief Gurcharan Singh Tohra allegedly seeking the votes of the Nirankaris in the Lok Sabha elections took a new turn today with senior Congress leader Amrinder Singh appealing to the Akal Takht Jathedar to resolve the Sikh-Nirankari dispute amicably.
He had left the Congress in 1984 in protest against Operation Bluestar to join the Akalis and opposed the entry of police in the Golden Temple complex during the Akali government headed by Surjit Singh Barnala.
Talking to the media persons, Amrinder Singh said in case Tohra was sincere in approaching the Nirankaris "We welcome it" arguing "I am for resolving the problem and not perpetuating it".
