On a visit to India this week, Deva met a slew of Indian leaders and decision-makers, all of whom he has subjected to the hardsell on his pet project: a chemical additive that blends with polythene resins during manufacture and helps it to degrade leaving behind only carbon dioxide and water.
The only way out, according to Deva is for government to make biodegradable plastic cheaper to manufacture by lowering the excise duty on the chemical additives, and making dirty plastic more expensive by hiking up the excise duties on non-degradable polythene.
Deva is a non-executive director of Symphony Environmental, the British company which discovered the breakthrough technology.

Fiji's Foreign Minister Kaliopate Tavola wrote a letter promoting Deva's candidacy in July which the country's deputy UN Ambassador Filimone Kau, said was not an official notification.
Kau said the Foreign Minister's letter "could be just a letter of support but we don't see it as an official note from the Government nominating him as a candidate for the position of Secretary-General".

Deva on Wednesday submitted papers of his candidacy, including a letter from the Fiji government, saying he should be added to the list of names to succeed Secretary-General Kofi Annan, whose term expires on December 31.
Instead Fiji's deputy U.N. ambassador, Filimone Kau, said in a note that "the letter presented to the council was not intended for the purpose of an official nomination by the Government of Fiji but was rather meant to support his candidacy," Vassilakis said.

Member Foreign Affairs Committee Two weeks ago I led a team of European Parliament Members to Observe the Second Round of the Presidential elections in Indonesia and joined the 250 EU long term and short term Observers who were in that country since the early part of this year.
Now its up to us to show that it can be done in the West, for ALL of US.
