Of all the battles alluded to in the Silmarillion, only one (Nirnaeth Arnoediad) has sufficient details to determine something by way of numbers; and none show anything more than the broadest of tactics.
It cannot be told in part, only to say that Thingol received his Silmaril and kept it in despite of the oath sworn by the sons of Fëanor, and this formed a break in the alliance between the Sindar of Doriath and the Noldor, weakening Beleriand and furthering the cause of Morgoth's hate.
The outcome of the Nirnaeth Arnoediad was disaster.

In a short sense, this was quite foresighted, but had Orodreth seen far beyond the Fifth Battle, he may not have given this warning.
Gwindor's company was the only group of elves from Nargothrond that went to the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, for Orodreth would not lead or send any troops with the Sons of Feanor, due to the deeds of Celegorm and Curufin.
