However, Nirodha in the teaching of Dependent Origination (as also in dukkhanirodha, the third of the Four Noble Truths) means the non-arising, or non-existence, of something because the cause of its arising is done away with.
Where Nirodha should be rendered as cessation is when it is used in reference to the natural way of things, or the nature of compounded things.
As for Nirodha in the third Noble Truth (or the Dependent Origination cycle in cessation mode), although it also describes a natural process, its emphasis is on practical considerations.

Patanjali's Yoga Sutras - Pada One
Translators often confuse the word nirodha as being active as in the act of stilling or even worse as the act of controlling, but rather the word, nirodha, is definitely passive i.e., it is stillness not stilling.
Nirodha, as cessation is thus passive to an extreme, yet yogic processes (sadhana) themselves are activities (active) as we shall see.
Commentary: It must be pointed out that the term, nirodha, is passive, thus yoga is not the restraint, suppression, nor control of the mind (as is too often mistranslated), but rather it is the elimination, dissolution, or remediation of the vrtti (which restrains and limits the citta).

By pativeda (penetrative knowledge) he comprehends that suffering is to be rightly and well-understood; that craving is to be abandoned, eradicated; that nirodha (cessation) is to be realized and that the path is to be developed.
By abhisamaya (insight) he fully grasps that suffering is to be rightly and well-understood; that craving is to be abandoned, eradicated; that nirodha (cessation) is to be realized and that the path is to be developed.
When nirodha saccã (otherwise called Nibbãnic peace) is comprehended through actual realization, the task of comprehending the Truth of Suffering is accomplished by recognising that the mundane rupa, nãma and sankhãra which arise and perish incessantly are indeed painful, suffering.

Nirodha, restraint, cessation or interception, is essential to sanyama because it is concerned neither with different states nor objects of consciousness, but chiefly with the process of transformation or replacement of the contents of consciousness.
With persistent effort, the yogin learns to remain in nirodha, relishing the peaceful, smooth flow of cosmic consciousness and reaching the highest samadhi.
Samadhiparinama, meditative transformation, occurs when nirodha is experienced not simply as a negation of objects of consciousness but rather as a positive meditation on nothingness.

Thus the Buddha taught ' tassayeva tanhaya asesa viraga nirodha ', that eradication, extinction of tanha is the truth of cessation of suffering.

Nirodha: the cessation mode of the Dependent Origination cycle: cessation of ignorance => cessation of volitional impulses => cessation of consciousness...
This is why the process of the cessation of suffering, or nirodha, which is included within the Middle Teaching, is simply a description of impersonal phenomena and their interrelated functioning to produce the cessation of suffering.
Nirodha: ignorance ceases => volitional impulses cease => consciousness ceases => body and mind cease => sense bases cease => contact ceases => feeling ceases => craving ceases => clinging ceases => becoming ceases => birth ceases => aging and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain grief and despair cease => the cessation of suffering

Nirodha means to withdraw the vibrations (Gati or the propensities of mind) and to direct them to the objectless (Avis'aya), ie to withdraw the mind from the objectivities.
Thus Yoga is 'Yogashcittavrtti Nirodhah', ie the Nirodha (channelisation) of all the Vrttis (propensities of mind).
In Yoga one has to do Vrtti nirodha, and for Vrtti nirodha one has to withdraw one's mind from the crude objects and direct it towards Parama'tman, then only suspension of propensities is possible.

 Yoga Sutras: Chapter 3
Yes, yoga aims at eliminating (nirodha) the agitations and disturbances (vrtti) of the citta, but change or transformation (parinama) from a constricted and obscured state of consciousness to an expanded state of clarity is desirable in yoga.
After stillness of the mind field (nirodha parinama) is achieved, then room has been made for the more subtle awareness -- the awareness of the source of awareness dawns in samadhi-parinama (integration/union) where one is always aware of the integrative state, although the integration itself may not be complete.
Samadhi parinama is a transformative tool when learned like nirodha parinama it can be applied to eradicating the arising (kshaya-udayau) of the tendencies of the mind's (cittasya), it's habitual objectification of I-it duality and fixation tendencies (sarva-arthata) which in turn disturb the mind's one pointed intent (ekagratayoh).

Translating akasa as space and the two nirodhas as nonentities is not that good, because space (desa) and time (kala) are among the samskrita-dharmas under the citta-viprayukta-samskaras, while akasa is not a samskara, of course.
Nonentities is too substantial rendering for the word nirodha - there is nothing substantial in nirodha, just two-fold ceasing of the rise of phenomena - pratisamkhya and apratisamkhya-nirodha.
These are some of the reasons that made me say that translating akasa as space and the two nirodhas as nonentities is not that good as the translation of samskrita and asamskrita as compounded and uncompounded.

I have a basic understanding of the concept of yoga being 'yogas chitta vritti nirodha' (the cessation of mental waves) / God-Realization, but I've become unsure that any dedicated hatha practice is going to achieve that goal.
Applying various meditation methods/breathing techniques to attain 'yogas chitta vritti nirodha' can't actually get you there when your life has yet to be lived in full.
Yoga practice, be it meditation or hatha yoga, will always end and you will always find yourself walking down the street, going to sleep, looking outside, thinking about something...unless somehow there develops the understanding that in all of these things at all times, 'yoga' can occur.
