  Hindu Scriptures
The holy scriptures of India, as is well known, consist of the Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda and Atharva Veda, and the exegetical texts, the Vedangas which are six viz., Siksha, Vyakarana, Nirukta, Chandas, Jyotisha and Kalpa; and their four supplements viz., Purana, Nyaya, Mimamsa and Dharma Sastra.
The Vedangas (limbs of the Vedas) are six – Siksha, Kalpa, Vyakarana, Nirukta, Chandas and Jyotisha.
It is said that Nirukta is the sine qua non for understanding the Vedas.

Jayadeva compiled a book known as Nirukta, the Vedic vocabulary, one of the six Vedangas.
There were five kinds of Niruktas, but in Kali-yuga they were destroyed by the evil people and Prakrit-bhasha or the illiterate language was established.
For the sake of the demigods, Panini the author of Ashtadhyayi grammar, overtook them and established the pure Sanskrit languagae.

Purpose and Origin of the Vedas
Another difficulty: Even before studying the Vedas one must study their six corollaries, or "limbs," called Vedangas.
These six limbs are siksa, the science of pronunciation; kalpa, the process of performing sacrifice; vyakarana, the rules of grammar; nirukta, the meanings and derivations of difficult words used in the Vedas; jyotisa, astronomy and astrology; and chandas, Vedic meters.
Each of these limbs is extensive and requires serious study.
