Now Nissan is giving it a try with the new Murano, although there's a twist: Like a kid with an inferiority complex, the Murano tries to compensate for the soft sedan in its genes with pumped-up muscles and a tougher-than-thou attitude.
The Murano grips the road with the firm smoothness of a good sedan, and there's even a sporty sensation: The steering is fairly stiff for a vehicle this size, and the accelerator pedal has a little extra resistance that coaxes a bit more effort out of the driver.

The Nissan Murano is a near-luxury mid-size crossover SUV manufactured by Nissan Motors which began retail sales in the 2003 model year, originally as the top-of-the-line SUV, which was larger than the Pathfinder, but the Armada took over from the Murano as the top SUV in the Nissan lineup for 2004.
Designed at Nissan Design America in La Jolla, California, it is based on the Nissan FF-L platform used by the Maxima and the third-generation Altima.

The Murano SL handling response is on the sporty side, not very firm, but not "floaty" either.
There are many things to like about the Murano and the AWD has proven excellent when driving in the rain (most of my driving in Florida, where it can rain an inch per hour, no problem).
I am going to visit with the Nissan dealer this week to see if they have any suggestions, but if this vehicle can't be made to make something closer to the EPA of 20/24 it is outta here.
