  ROCKCRAWLER.com - 2002 Nissan Xterra
For those not familiar with Nissans, the base trim level is the XE, whereas the SE is the higher level.
The power is immediately available, unlike a turbo-charged motor, but in all honesty, after driving the Xterra for a week, we felt the supercharger really brought the power to weight ratio right around where it should be in the first place.
If we were to buy an Xterra, we would certainly want the supercharged model, despite the fact that it requires premium fuel and has the potential for more maintenance down the road.

But the Nissan PR folks insisted the new Nissan Xterra was up to the challenge--and as it turns out, they were right.
As far as their lineup goes, the Xterra is the SUV for the hard-core.
The latter holds the Xterra in place on steep hills; the former maintains a comfortable speed when descending steep hills, without brake or throttle inputs from the driver.

 2005 Nissan Xterra Description
When it was originally introduced in 1999, the Nissan Xterra stood out in a crowd of nearly 40 competitive sport utility vehicles with its rugged truck frame, purposeful styling and “everything you need, nothing you don’t” adventure positioning.
Two of the most significant changes to the new Xterra are the use of a version of the new “F-Alpha” platform, which was created for use on the new Nissan Titan full-size pickup and Nissan Armada full-size SUV, and the utilization of a new 4.0-liter version of Nissan’s VQ-series V6 engine.
The 2005 Xterra’s wheelbase has been extended two full inches for a smoother ride and greater interior room, yet the overall length is only two-tenths of an inch longer due to a reduced front overhang – which enhances maneuverability in off-road hill climbing and trail situations.

Inside Line: First Drive: 2005 Nissan Xterra - The Xtreme SUV   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Nissan's plan for the 2000 Xterra was to build an SUV for younger, more active people who needed the space and versatility of a large vehicle but wanted to look edgy and cool when they pulled up to the lake or off-road trails.
Nissan attempted to fix these flaws when the Xterra underwent a midcycle redesign in 2002, and we found it to be a much improved animal in our first drive.
It may not be the prettiest or plushest vehicle in the Nissan stable, but the 2005 Nissan Xterra should serve as a capable, practical and fun-to-drive tool for the action hero set.

Standard in the Xterra SE (and optional for the XE model), the 3.3-liter V6 was taken from the 1996-2000 Pathfinder and is, of course, shared with the Frontier (1999 to present).
Our perception of the Xterra's braking ability is supported by performance testing results from both our 1999 and 2001 Mini SUV Comparison Tests -- in both instances, the Xterra finished near the top of the pack in 60-to-0 braking despite the fact that it was the heaviest vehicle.
Nissan would have to get rid of the first aid kit to do this, though, and on the one occasion that we had need for the kit, it was found to have a very useful assortment of bandages, gauze and ointments.

2005 Nissan Xterra - The Car Connection
Just looking at the Xterra's profile and stance, it looks like a vehicle that would be extremely capable off-road, and a short trip onto a few rough trails gave all indications that it's a truck that's tough enough for more serious off-roading than just going up a two-track to the campsite.

The new Xterra is an inch taller and about the same length as the old version, but the wheelbase is two inches longer, which translates to slightly shorter overhangs.

Nissan Xterra Reviews and Ratings - 2003 Nissan Xterra | Car.com
Nissan has steadily improved the Xterra since its 2000 debut, and this year is no exception.
Because it is based on the Nissan Frontier, because it is a truck first and a commuter vehicle second, because it was constructed using existing rather than dedicated hardware, the Xterra is not a good choice for a daily driver, traveling to and from the office primarily on dry, paved roads.
Since its debut, the Xterra has been marketed as providing "everything you need and nothing you don't." In a sense, this is true, but as time marches on, we see a softening of the back-to-basics philosophy.

In the "you pick your battles carefully" genre, Nissan inched its way forward in bits and pieces with the current Xterra, as much attention was diverted toward the launch of the company's first full-size pickup truck in '04 where it plans to stake a claim.
But that doesn't detract from the Xterra's rugged and functional spot in a segment populated more and more by creampuff contenders touting sumptuous ride and civilized handling over the requisite guts for going off-road.

Perhaps Nissan wanted to induce a more cushy ride and refinement into the Pathfinder but this could be on example of how engineering too many platforms almost lead to Nissan's financial demise.
Nissan has learned its lesson well as the new second generation Xterra re-joins the Pathfinder family by adopting the Titan truck's F-Alpha platform (also utilized by the new Frontier and Pathfinder).
The new Xterra is natural progression of the previous SUV's lineage now with a world class V-6 engine and 5 speed automatic (or 6 speed manual) so Nissan should have a great seller on its hands.
