Anita Donna Dooley (aka Nita Naldi) was born in New York City on April 1, 1897.
She did continue to be active on the stage and later on in the infant medium of television.
On February 17, 1961, Nita died of a heart attack in her room at the Wentworth Hotel and was interred in Calvary Cemetery on Long Island.

Although Barrymore would later dismiss her as his "dumb Duse," Naldi is surprisingly modern in her flamboyant role as Hyde's would-be seducer and she steals every scene she's in.
She was personally selected by famed writer Vicente Blasco-Ibanez (who, Naldi claimed, dropped his dentures down her cleavage while engaged in a tirade against the Catholic church) for the role of the temptress Doña Sol in Blood and Sand (1922), outrageously vamping Rudolph Valentino who seems to be literally energized by her lustful behavior.
Contrary to popular belief, Naldi did not play the native girl in Alfred Hitchcock's directorial debut, The Pleasure Garden (1925), but she did turn up somewhat unexpectedly as the schoolteacher in his second film, The Mountain Eagle (1926), a presumably welcome respite from vamping.

There are some twists and turns that the audience might not expect, and which might explain why "Cobra" was something of flop in 1925, but in retrospect this film counts as a shining example of the silent cinema.
Nita Naldi is very effective as the man eating Elise and her vampish seduction of an almost reluctant Valentino is superbly staged and Naldi earns her place among the 1920's screen vamps.
Of particular note is the elaborate gown worn by Nita Naldi in her great seduction scene of Valentino which is all fl with sparkly sequins on it, most fetching indeed.

He tends to be hammy as the leering beast of a thug but brings a tortured struggle to the repressed doctor, horrified at the demon he's unleashed, guilty that he enjoys Hyde's unrestrained life of drinking and whoring, and terrified that he can no longer control the transformations.
The whole "feel" of the film, however is near-perfect, and Nita Naldi, almost 90 years after the fact, is still sexy in a dance-hall-singer sort of way.
This silent version of the film is of more importance from a historical standpoint than from an artistic standpoint, since Barrymore gave the American horror film some much needed legitimacy by playing this part (Lon Chaney was still five years away from making "The Phantom of the Opera").
