I think the main characteristics of Japanese gardens are formal representation (such as the stone arrangement), planting, enjoyment of nature, and idealized reproduction of natural landscape through artificial technique.
The essential tradition of the Japanese garden and the essence of its beauty are not in the concrete compositional elements such as stone lanterns, tsukubai and pine trees, but in the usage of them-the way of representation and the aesthetic sense behind them.
The beauty of the Japanese garden is successfully expressed by the designer who understands the beauty of the region and can capture the heart and recreate the philosophy of nature's meaning.
